Strange Doings on the Sun

To complicate the riddle, the sun also is undergoing one of its oddest magnetic reversals on record.

Normally, the sun's magnetic north and south poles change polarity every 11 years or so. During a magnetic-field reversal, the sun's polar magnetic fields weaken, drop to zero, and then emerge again with the opposite polarity. As far as scientists know, the magnetic shift is notable only because it signals the peak of the solar maximum, said Douglas Biesecker at NASA's Space Environment Center.

But in this cycle, the sun's magnetic poles are out of sync, solar scientists said. The sun's north magnetic pole reversed polarity more than a year ago, so it has the same polarity as the south pole.

Lucky one isn’t in possession of a superstitious personality, or this might be deemed ominous.

Velikovsky’s works come immediately to mind...

"It may give us a brief respite from global warming," said Dr. Hathaway. "But it is not going to stop it."

As long as the liars are in charge, nothing is going to stop the lie.

Actually, our tech base is better capable of producing heat instead of cooling - if that’s what we want to do.

I watched a show about cold on the science channel just the other day that made that point. Warmth flowing to cold is the natural state of the universe. Drop someone in the jungle and they can make fire but they can't make ice.

While I'm not a global warming believer I do believe that we can warm the planet if we want to simply because it is easier to warm than cool. If ice sheets began to advance, I believe we could slow or stop them by seeding the ice with cold loving alge that would lower the albedo (Reflectivity) of the ice. Its an effect I use every winter when I get lazy about breaking up ice on my sidewalk. I have black rubber mats that I throw down and they heat up in the sun melting the ice underneath.

Not only that, colder historically has meant dryer, also impacting agriculture. Our current world system can handle warming MUCH better than cooling.

From the article:Several solar scientists speculated that the sun may be returning to a more relaxed state after an era of unusually high activity that started in the 1940s.

Before the 40's were the 30's and it doesn't get much drier than that.

The Sun now has two south poles.

The magnetic north pole switched to south, but the south pole has yet (after a year) to switch to magnetic north.

I don’t get why they don’t fly apart. But I’m happy that they didn’t.

I wonder if this one ought to be called the “Watts Minimum?

I'm more of a gallows-humor guy.

I vote for "Gore Minimum" or "Mann Minimum".

What does the sun peoples compasses say on them then?

All points on their compasses are labelled 'South'. Because it's WARM everywhere on the Sun.

: )

Doesn’t it cool-off at night?

That’s a nice thumb-in-the-eye approach, and I’d go along with it, except that I’d prefer that neither of those two be preserved for posterity in any way.

It’s always good to have bad-examples to point to and tell the youngun’s “Don’t do that”.

Doesn’t it cool-off at night?

Only when it rains.

And when I say “eliminate,” I mean “kill.” Twenty-five million people.

How many do we kill each year with abortion ?

“Strange Doings On the Sun” ‘Strange?’ Strange compared to what? How many long Solar cycles are there that we know nothing about? We observe the Sun for a few hundred years and believe we have figured out the whole deal. Yes, we have detected some smaller cycles. Are there small and large formations of dust that our Solar System passes through every 500, 1500, 10,000 years? What other factors cause the Great Cold to envelope our little planet? How cold does it get on Mars, and further out?
We must colonize out there, since one day our Sun will burn all her hydrogen. New suns are born every day. Will we dare to visit, or just redistribute until nothing is left?

Think!

A magnetic monopole is a hypothetical particle in particle physics that is an isolated magnet with only one magnetic pole. Scientists have been probing into quantum physics trying to find this exotic particle, but have had no luck. It features in string theory, as well as the grand unified field theory.

Uhh, ok.

The Sun will go dwarf (according to the consensus model) in about 5 billion years, IOW, we have plenty of time to plan our exit. In fact, it seems mighty unlikely that humans will even exist then.

The magnetic field switcheroo of the Sun happens fairly often, and has been observed a number of times in most of our lifetimes. Proxy data (e.g., tree rings) indicate that it isn’t a precise cycle, but goes on continually.
