Vanity: Looking for a good all purpose hunting rifle for Christmas
Me | 11/6/13 | Me

Posted on 11/06/2013 12:31:49 PM PST by bigtoona

I know this will get a lot of replies but go for it. I just want to get some opinions on the different rifles out there to help me decide.

I grew up in PA until I was 11 so I never got to actually hunt with my brother and dad so I'm not super educated about all of the rifles out there.

I have pistols, shotguns and a couple of .22 rifles but now I would like to get a decent rifle for deer in case I get an opportunity to go hunting with a friend. Nothing too fancy or massively powerful, just good quality and dependable. Thanks all!

I will not allow anyone to hunt with us that has a Remington bolt rifle

The Model 700 is one of the finest mass produced firearms ever manufactured. Guns don't kill people....people kill people.

A .223 is not adequate for deer.I would say that a 30/30 has about twice the killing power on medium game. The .308 has higher velocity and energy than a 30/30,plus a .308 can use all types of bullets where a 30/30 must use round nose because of the tubular magazine.

" Savage has the best rifles for an affordable price IMO. Their accutrigger is very nice.

^^^ This right here. Worth saying again.

The .300 Savage is still a great excuse to buy a Savage 99 or Remington 81 Woodmaster, two very cool guns.

Yep, though I have neither.

There is a rifle I always wished I could find. I think Savage made an over/under in 30-30/12 gauge. It was very nice, walnut and blue, not like the .22/410 guns that are more common. With good handloads that would be a great truck gun. I have never seen one in person though.

FWIW, I'm also inheriting a .44 magnum. The rounds look like it will really kick! I love my .357 but that .44 looks like it might hurt.

My Marlin lever is a pussycat.

30 some years never had a problem with M700 rifles.

I will not allow anyone to hunt with us that has a Remington bolt rifle.

Oh bother. Doubt I'd want to anyway.

I love my S&W 686 .357 Magnum. It is one of my home defense weapons. My Taurus Raging Bull in .44 Magnum is just as sweet and accurate as can be. The lead will fly if TS ever HTF. Range time with spent brass tells all.

Thats interesting since they’re still in use today nthere just called the M40A5. Never like the 7.63x51 it’s pretty much a mediocre round compared to many others out there. The 300 Win Mag is gaining popularity as well as some of the Lapua rounds. Of all the calibers being used today by our US Military I’d put it at the bottom rung of the ladder.

7.62x51. Fat lazy finger and maybe wisky.

“Oh bother. Doubt I’d want to anyway.”

No kidding! The last 700 I bought is a 700 CDL-SF in 257 Weatherby. My oldest is actually a Rem 721 in 300 Weatherby and I have several in between. I’ve still got my old 700 built by GC Broughton back in the late 700’s that shoot a .163 three shot group at 200 yards in a Match at Notree’s TX. I competed up until 1994 and every rifle I used and most everybody else that was actually placing shoot 700 actions. I built several rifles off the old 788 and 600 actions that shot very well. I don’t compete anymore but I still hunt whitetails out here in West TX, in over 50 years of shooting Remington actions I’ve yet to have one problem.

I hear the stories but never saw a 700 malfunction. Since I heard the stories I have tried every one I could get a hold of to get one to. So far no “luck”.

I don’t usually comment on these threads, but can’t pass on Hornady Leverevolution. Bought a box for my .44 Marlin 94 a couple years ago on the advice (ignored) of a knowledgeable friend, and put them away, the .44 being a brush gun. My previous favorite, Win Silvertips, being hard to find, I took them out this weekend, and three shot groups at 50 yards were all in contact. Cheap sighting target with cardboard behind so couldn’t measure, but surpassed anything I expected, and will be shopping for more this weekend. My only concern deformed tips, I usually just have on in the chamber and one in the mag, but is that an issue? Strikes me as a great handgun round, hunting

Hard to go wrong with a Winchester Model 94 30-30.

Actually if a person is going to go with a lever action 30-30 then a Marlin is a better gun than the model 94. You can mount a scope on a Marlin much easier and a Marlin is more accurate. I have owned both and know what I'm talking about.

Get out of the internet forums and spend some time in real life.

I had a 30-30 before my boating accident- I was going to go for 30.06 but this one was so pretty and calling out to me

Is the main difference distance?

I can hit something at 200 yards easy with the 30-30 but I guess the 30-06 will allow you to reach out and touch someone from 600 yards

While I like my older win 94, I agree, and much prefer my Marlin 94. I don’t know who produced what first on what day back in 1894, but isn’t it ironic that when you say 1894, people think Winchester, as well as when you say 30/30. Which was the Marlin designation for the Winchester 30wcf.
