Gregariousness and emotion are not hard characteristics of Christianity. Jesus was not the happy-go-lucky guy that liberals and many heretical evangelicals make him out to be.

My mother in law has dementia. When we have her at out house, Martin the cat ignores her. Rufus the dog (Standard Poodle) sits by her side constantly. He looks at her with sympathy, as though he knows something is not right, and somehow knows he needs to be by her side when she is with us.
