Got an Engine - What do I do with it?

The body of my lawn mower broke. Totaled. I purchased a new lawn mower. But I now have a 6.25 HP Briggs & Stratton engine that runs as good as the day it was bought. So what do I do with the engine? (It seems such a waste to get rid of it)

Build a nice ceiling fan.

What did you say. I can't here you because of the ceiling fan. Did you say slice a Steeler's fan?

Most vertical shaft lawn mower engines will not run properly without a blade on them. The reason is because the flywheel is not heavy enough by it’s self.

So the only thing it’s really good for is to put on another mower. Try to sell it.

"Advertise" it if you have a "company e-mail" site...I work at a small college, with a "college-Personal" faculty/staff forum for listing items for sale, etc...I had 20 offers for a large snowblower that didn't work, good engine though, and some people are really good at refurbishing/rebuilding/reusing...I'm not one of them, and just wanted it out of my garage, so I gave it away to the first person that wanted it, but it's good to keep things that still/can be made to work! I was surprised that there was so much interest from this "academic" crowd - people have interesting "other" skills and hobbies!!

I listed as "must pick up"...and eBay's also a great place to buy/sell things...I buy a lot, have never sold, but I'm sure you can list for local pick-up only...

Or, you could make a scooter or go-cart or power back-up out of it, as others have suggested - LOL!

“Backup generator. run 12V alternators to battery bank.”

Ditto that. Vertical shaft engines are good for a motor/alternator set up. See

http://www.theepicenter.com/tow082099.html go to this site to see how to build an improvised DC generator from a vertical shaft mower engine. Then with a deep cycle marine battery and an inverter you will have a source of AC/DC power that can be replicated at will for the cost of lawn sale mowers and parts.

Ah, the B&S engine is balanced for the rotational load of the 21 blade at a constant (relatively) demand. But can I get some use from it is my question, sir.

That`s a slick setup. Built one years ago for charging my late brothers trolling battery on weekend fishing trips. Also works as an improvised AC source with a http://www.theinverterstore.com/?gclid=CJLxkMHplLoCFXRp7Aodwx8Atw sine wave inverter.
I can vouch for it`s effectiveness.

When I was a teenager, the better mechanically equipped kids would weld up frames and wheels to make these little scooter things about a foot high. One speed, roar around the neighborhood. Likely illegal now like everything else.........
