Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

So is Matt Thornton. I forgot he was with BOS, didn’t make the postseason roster in any round. But he’ll still get that bling.

it would have been an interesting game if Matheny did not get a Lance Lynn fascination .... what was that all about?

And Farrell did his best Grady Little in the 7th.

at least we are not saying:
“Where’s Trevor Rosenthal? Not in the game”

You mean you wouldn’t have put your 4th starter in during the 7th inning with runners on base and the season slipping away? Really?

I wonder what LaRussa thinks of his successor.

I got my last Red Sox hat from that store. :-)

Yes, and the man Erin Andrews interviewed - who was either Arthur or Henry D’Angelo - not only founded that big Red Sox merchandise team store across from Fenway Park, the D'Angelo twins also founded the very successful worldwide sports apparel company: Forty Seven Brand.

More about their story here:

Forty Seven Brand - Our Story

Arthur and Henry D'Angelo were twins... only one is alive today, I forget which is which.

Mr. D'Angelo is a fixture at Fenway, and at Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers, FL during spring training as well. He is *always* in the Boston and Ft. Myers team stores, talking to fans and answering questions.

And Erin Andrews said Mr. D'Angelo owned a lowly "convenience store with t-shirts and hats" across from Fenway. Bah! ;-)

But I never got a broken arm at Fenway Park!!

That's my claim to fame, FRiend! In 2010 Adrian Beltre took out Jacoby Ellsbury, Jeremy Hermida, then ME in a matter of a few months.

I was on the DL for awhile, but recovered nicely. ;-)

It’s been a great ride folks.

Let’s do it again next year.

Amen to that, Mears!

The 2013 season for our Red Sox was a great ride! I knew the Sox would be far better than they were the past two years, simply because of the addition of Manager John Farrell, but I never predicted a World Series win!

Amazing ALDS, ALCS and World Series, too, vs. some tough teams (TB Rays, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals). High drama for every game... the stress was overwhelming at times! I'm actually glad it's over.

Congratulations to the 2013 World Series Champions - The Boston Red Sox!!!

So for the 21st Century make it Red Sox 3, Yankees 2.

Love it! :-)

Good riddance to him. Enjoy your retirement, Tim!

I'm sure Joe Buck will find another sidekick to cheer on his Cardinals for years to come on Fox.

We owe the Dodgers a giant Thank You!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. We got a slew of quality players with that Dodgers trade... Gomes, Napoli, Uehara, Ross, just to name a few.

And I don't miss malcontent whiners Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez or Carl Crawford. Nick Punto was a good guy, though... not a whiner.

Good mornin' y'all

Went to a friends house for a WS party last night..mostly Rays fans..who congratulated me, but said Wait Till Next Year to excess..LOL

Doesn't get much better than this. A few quick thoughts:

When Pedey made that error, I thought the gates of hell were about to open..

I wonder what odds you can get in Vegas that the same two teams are in the WS next year. They should both make it. Cards are scary good with all those young arms, and bats, coming up.BTW..look for Freese to be traded.

If Middlebrooks can remember how to hit..the Sawx are set with 3/4 of their infield for the next 5 years. if not longer..Bogaerts is a stud...

I think Ellsbury's gone...hope he stays but I wouldn't give him the BIG $$ and long term deal he wants. Seattle will throw $$ at him. He's been hurt a lot the last two years, and it's still hard to explain the huge drop off in his power numbers.

I leave you for now with this one last very happy thought:

There are millions who are even more upset than the Cards and their fans...that's the Yankees...who look like the morning line fave to finish LAST in the AL East in 2014..
