While I have not been in America for almost ten years, I do watch American TV via my G-sat. My most popular channel is the History Channel. What shocks and amazes me is that most all of the women on all of the programs are slathered with Tattoos. Is this a new phenomena in America? Have women degraded themselves to such an extent? Some may think it cool. I think it is disgusting.
Ive never understood why tattoo parlor s are open all night. Even with the explosion of tattooing, I cant see enough demand to justify running a business all night.

I see a tattoo and my first thought is, “Here’s Your Sign.”
The best thing one can do is turn off cable and choose your entertainment and not expect to be educated by your tv unless you download content yourself.
Tattoo - The Who
Me and my brother were talking to each other
‘Bout what makes a man a man
Was it brain or brawn, or the month you were born,
We just couldn’t understand
Our old man didn’t like our appearance
He said that only women wear long hair
So me and my brother borrowed money from Mother
We knew what we had to do
We went downstairs, past the barber and gymnasium
And got our arms tattooed
Welcome to my life, tattoo
I’m a man now, thanks to you
I expect I’ll regret you
But the skin graft man won’t get you
You’ll be there when I die
Tattoo
My dad beat me ‘cause mine said “Mother”
But my mother naturally liked it and beat my brother
‘Cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude
And my mother thought that was extremely rude
Welcome to my life, tattoo
We’ve a long time together, me and you
I expect I’ll regret you
But the skin graft man won’t get you
You’ll be there when I die
Tattoo
Now I’m older, I’m tattooed all over
My wife is tattooed too
A rooty-toot-toot, A rooty-tooty-toot-toot
Rooty-toot-toot tattoo too
To you
BARF! Tattoos are disgusting!
I really expected they would show people having their tatts removed, but no such luck.
When I was a child, a tattoo was a sure sign that a man had been in prison. then when I was a young adult it was a sign that they had been an the military.
NOW? On a young person, it is a sign that they are an idiot!
If all you see is people on American television, tattoos might not be as wide spread as it appears. It kind of depends on where you go. Biker bars? Yeah!
It’s not quite THAT common, Alex.
And I’ll be the last holdout against getting one.
“Its gonna be really nasty a few decades from now when therell be tatted up old ladies everywhere.”
I’ve pontificated enough on this subject; you know my views on this: ULTIMATE TRASH.
I saw a woman who lives in my complex in the laundry area ~2 weeks ago. I’d say she’s in her mid-40’s, so-so looking. She had both a tat on the ankle AND a nose stud. I had to summon all my powers not to laugh out loud at her.
A pathetic attempt to look young and hip. She looks neither; she looks like an as*hole.
Dr. Evil said it best: “There’s nothing more pathetic than an aging hipster.”
Interesting that there are more tattoo removal places opening up...looks like more and more idiots are having their “Oh sh*t, what did I do?” moments of clarity.
I thought they were called “tramp stamps”?
True—but of course if PBS weren’t government subsidized, there’d be a much bigger purely commercial market for more culturally oriented TV.
“When I was young, stupid and in the Navy, I got two tatoos both of which are on my upper arms and not noticeable unless I wear a sleeveless shirt. Do I regret getting those? Definitely.”
My Korean War veteran uncle feels the same way you do about the tats he got - still hates ‘en 60 years later.
It isn’t my business what someone hides on her body but when it is visible, it is disgusting to me.
Hundred percent agree. It’s gross. It’s like America has transformed into some type of primitive tribe.
Idiocracy was a work of non-fiction.
Honestly, I see it often, at places like the grocery store....usually on girls with rolls of fat hanging out, or very weathered-looking older women.
That pic on the upper right, of the guys in jeans and fairly normal-fitting shorts, actually looks neat compared to what I see during the summer...or what I call slob season. Men wear oversized, long, flapping tees, and big baggy shorts past their knees. I wish I could remember the name of the Freeper who said they look like overgrown Peanuts characters.
And don’t get me started on flip-flops....
That's a straw man argument.
You can shop at Neiman Marcus and still dress like a slob. You can shop at Walmart and dress with dignity.
How much of a status symbol is wearing hard shoes as opposed to flip flops? How much of a status symbol is wearing long pants instead of shorts? When did tucking in your shirt become a status symbol? And guys, those silly baseball caps make you look like Goober Pyle.
The problem is not one of status symbols; the problem is 54-year-old men who dress no differently than they did when they were 4 years old.
That doesn't work in reality, because although there are some cable or even network shows that are good or excellent, the majority of the programming is driven by the tastes of the low information viewers i.e. the dullards. It's like going to a restaurant where the choices on the menu are determined by little kids or teenagers...pizza, fatty food, macaroni and cheese, etc. And you get to choose what kind of rotten food you want to eat. Some choices, huh?
Incidentally, I rarely watch PBS anymore because since they allowed viewers to determine what shows they put on, most of the viewing is awful. PBS occasionally puts on outstanding shows, but let's face it, the tastes of the average American in entertainment is terrible.
