I work for Uncle Sam, and I’m proud of it
The Washington Post ^ | 10/2/2013 | Jason Ullner

Posted on 10/02/2013 9:16:14 AM PDT by Night Hides Not

I am a federal bureaucrat. A professional government employee. And guess what? I’m damn proud of it.

It seems that all I hear these days are the once and future leaders of our country tripping over themselves to denigrate the work we do. I’m tired of it, and I’m fed up. I don’t claim to represent anyone other than myself, but I would bet that a fair number of federal employees feel as I do.

We are lawyers, doctors, PhD students, economists, writers, electricians, construction workers, security officers and technology specialists. We are not a drain on the national economy; rather, we are a primary reason why the United States remains as great as it is.

Ah, see...thanks for proving my point. You start projecting immediately without even responding to the facts presented.

And no, I’m not, any longer.

Did my 20 in the USAF, but thanks anyway for the consideration.

Please provide an example of my “anger”...and I never intimated anything about all the other strawmen you built either.

I merely pointed out the fact that boorish behavior towards other FReepers is the primary reason many aren’t popping their heads up during this whack-a-mole bash fest.

It’s indiscriminate, uncalled for and quite crass.

You are a Liberal. You act like one, you post like one, and you argue like one. I am taking flak from you because I’m over the target. Your days at the trough are coming to an end.

You obviously don’t know very many government workers or the nature of their jobs.

I know enough, and I also know that as a group, they are no more altruistic than anyone else, like the author would have us believe. In fact, as a group, IMO government workers are less so than private sector employees, because it is a heck of a lot harder to get fired from a government job, at every level, than a private sector one. Job security is a lot better for government workers over the last 50-60 years than out in the real world.

Yes, thick skin is required in many circumstances, but not all FReepers are conditioned to that. After 20 years in the military, I learned that showing weakness will only embolden bullies, idiots and losers.

What I’m getting at here is that there have been other threads and instances during the past few days here on FR where I’ve seen good folks excoriated for even daring to put forth an alternate point of view on the impacts of this shutdown.

For example; at Edwards AFB, the commissary is closed during the shutdown. The military folks living on base, are ~20 miles away from the nearest grocery store, an Albertson’s that charges premium prices on just about everything thanks to the damnable unions. The nearest China “mart” is an additional 15 miles or so down the road. Gas is near $4 a gallon. So the ones impacted most, who can least afford it, are the junior enlisted.

It’s not just civilians who are “raking in the big dough” and on “paid vacay” being impacted here.

This is what I’m talking about...it’s unbecoming.

Folks are throwing hand grenades instead of sniping. Too many collaterals.

Feh...You posted to me first remember? So I obviously got under your skin for you to start shooting flak at me...you’re ass backwards, projecting your own failings.

And even though I’m under no obligation to share anything with you AH’s like you, I will this....

I don’t feed at the trough and my anger management is a lot more effective than yours.

Loser...

You’d be fired if you worked in the public sector. Now who really is the loser. The taxpayers are not your slaves, Liberal.

Lots of cheese necessary for all that whine.

Absolutely.

As a retired DOD Government employee, I can see that Jason Ullner suffers from the same problem as too many (but not all) of the people I worked with over the years did.

They forgot that the term "Civil Service" means that you are hired by the Government to perform a service that is payed for by Taxpayers.

Thus, they, and the rest of the Government work for the people who pay those taxes (I won't comment about those who don't pay taxes), and the services provided should always be the best value for the funds spent.

In any discussions I have with people about the Federal Government, I always try to convince them that:

1. The Government should ONLY be doing things justified by the Constitution.

2. Never assume that the Government will do anything faster, better, cheaper, etc. That includes hiring contractors to perform the work under the auspices of "saving" money.

3. Always assume that every Government activity, once started, will NEVER end.

4. Know that the majority of any initial (and probably follow-on) funding for any new Government activity will be spent on new buildings, furnishings, art for buildings, etc., and will not go directly to the function that the activity was sold to the public on. The best way to go up the food chain is to create an ever expanding organization that you oversee.

5. Public Unions should never, ever, ever be allowed. Ever.

6. There are good and bad people working in the Government, and in the Contractor companies they hire. Usually those folks try to stay out of the limelight/politics and just do the best job they can.

7. Government needs to be rolled way, way back to just those Constitutional requirements. And then what's left needs to be monitored closely to see that real benefits vs costs are occurring.

I could go on, but my fingers are tired.

I easily understand the frustration being voiced about the Government/workers here on FR. I could tell some horror stories of what I saw during my time in the Civil Service.

“I am a federal bureaucrat.”

You are a parasite. A leech. A tick. A tapeworm. A vampire. You and your legions have suffocated every government since the dawn of time from Egypt to Ecuador. Every dime you make is a dime thrown down a rathole. You do nothing, and if by some accident you do make some contribution, it is at twice the cost and half the efficiency of your counterpart (if there even IS one) in the private sector.

Your wages are paid by stealing food from the mouths of babies. Sloth is your watchword and villainy your creed. Remember that line from the Declaration of Independence, in which Jefferson praised King George for “sen[ding] hither swarms of officers to harass our people and eat out their substance”? You don’t? Neither do I. That’s because he DIDN’T praise the king; he cited those officers as a casus belli — justification for war! YOU are the modern-day agents of the sorry “king” that now squats in the White House. If you and the rest of your horde vanished tomorrow, the only impact would be cheaper parking in DC.

To call you worthless is to devalue worthlessness.

2. Isn't it better to hire an experienced professional to oversee troubled banks and contractors

The government should not be involved in private businesses.

Look clown...you started this thrash fest with your inane, boorish and petulant name calling just because I hit a pig with a thrown rock.

So as long as you keep posting garbage in a pedantic and childish attempt to impugn me, I’m going to keep responding.

Did you get your kleenex to wipe the spittle off your monitor yet?

The government should not be involved in private businesses.

As it pertains to banks, that issue was resolved with the formation of the FDIC in 1933.

Are you saying that banks should not be regulated?

It's pretty funny when we're told "horror stories" by career employees. They get no sympathy from those of us that worked in the private sector.

They've never had to endure "management has decided to move in a different direction," where you're given 30 minutes to clean out your desk.

Yes. The government should also not be involved in schools, housing, or any other “public assistance” program.
