'South Park' NSA surveillance spoof gets big ratings

South Park. It’s the 17th season. And yet Wednesday night’s premiere delivered the animated comedy’s biggest rating in years.

The Comedy Central hit came back to 4.3 million viewers across three telecasts, with the first airing delivering the most viewers for the show since 2011 and the highest young male demo ratings since 2010.

The episode titled “Let Go, Let Gov” mocked the NSA’s mass surveillance scandal (clip below). In the episode, Cartman played the role of an Edward Snowden-style whistleblower who infiltrates the NSA and rants about privacy violations — yet can’t stop revealing his every thought online to anybody who will listen.

South Park fans had a longer-than-usual wait for new episodes this year, given that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s decision to produce fewer episodes (10 per year). On Sunday, South Park also won its fifth Emmy for outstanding animated program.

I loved it. I loved how Cartman is talking on his phone using the speaker phone. Actually I have come across people like that in life. They have the phone up to their ear talking so loud and I’m standing there then they give me the look like “don’t stand close to me”. As if I can’t hear them even from afar, sheesh.

Are Trey Parker and Matt Stone still in the hardcore libertarian camp like they used to be? I know that they were once known for being the ultimate equal opportunity offenders when it came to political satire and ridicule, but recently I have been under the impression that they have become more strictly leftist just like 90 + % of all the other political comedy shows out there.

Interesting. Can you think of even a few episodes from the last few seasons where they picked specific liberals and/or liberal sacred cows and actively decided to go after and ridicule them? It would be great if there were even a few examples from the last 3 seasons or so of South park.

I was amazed by this one. It makes fun of abortions and the tranny crowd(2 “sacred cows” for the Hollywood left). Warning, some of the language is a little rough-

I remember that one, I loved how they showed that you don’t even have to be particularly religious to see the inanity of the pro abortion crowd. Basic common sense is all you need.

But that was from Season 9 -a very old episode by South Park standards, I don’t really know of an episode where they went after leftist sacred cows like that in the last 3 seasons or so , i.e. Seasons 14-16 or so.

“Basic common sense is all you need.”

Common sense has become a “hate crime” in today’s world.

“I don’t really know of an episode where they went after leftist sacred cows like that in the last 3 seasons or so , i.e. Seasons 14-16 or so.”

Interesting that all those seasons occurred during the Maobama adminstration. Perhaps they’ve grown scared of the consequences of satirizing leftists?

It is for sure possible, and it is also for sure possible that they have gotten their courage back with this episode. And fans who have longed for them to go back to their classic, equal opportunity offender days have clearly taken notice, as their new ratings showed.

From what I've seen, they've leaned moderately more left. Not by much. Some of their social commentary is rather appropriate. Like the poster above me said, however, I have not seen any attacks beyond the typical "organized religion is retarded and let's make fun of people because we should but also have an important message at the end of the episode, but sometimes not because that's really cool too". Blah blah blah. The 90's are over.

I was cracking up at when he gave DMV material to the Jehovah’s Witnesses people and they all started singing gospel music by the Obama portrait.

Alec Baldwin was in Mercury Rising.

He had two long quotes where he is a big government patriot.

“And you play your position because that’s what America is.

It’s one big team.

This might be difficult for you to grasp, but I am a patriot.

And a patriot is one who makes the right moral choice.”

“Men like Rasheed Halabi...

an Iraqi-American and a great patriot.

When they came to his house and he ended up slamming the door in their faces after he gave them literature? Priceless.

I can’t think of one episode where they aren’t going after leftist sacred cows.

Same with rightist sacred cows. They pretty much attack the stupidity of people, neighbors, towns, the nation, etc. in every form that it appears. Every act of stupidity is someone’s sacred cow.

Maybe we have gotten so used to South Park being outrageous, that we don’t notice the subtle details.
