A Georgia Tech researcher asks: Where are the black students in science, math?

...

71 percent of the 2,500 black students in APS who took the Mathematics II exam in 2011, failed and only 1 percent, 25 students, passed with distinction (Pass Plus). By contrast, only 21 percent of white students failed with 79 percent passing and 23 percent of those passing with distinction.

In Fulton County, where 62 percent of black students failed the Mathematics II exam, 90 percent of the white students passed, 32 percent with distinction. The failure rates and achievement gaps throughout most of the school districts in the metro-Atlanta area are astonishing.

The consequence of this reality is that black students are excluded from much of the STEM conversation and are nearly entirely excluded from the higher level STEM education discourse. For the incoming 2013 freshman class of first time full time freshmen at Georgia Tech, for example, there were only 61 applicants from the entire Atlanta Public School system, nearly 2,500 seniors. Of those 61 applicants, 26 were admitted and 15 have enrolled.

Despite APS being 79 percent black students, only 28 percent, or 17 applicants, of the total applicants from APS were black. Of those 17 applicants, only 1 black freshman was admitted.

Charles Murray says much the same thing. You’re on solid ground.

My best guess now is that those who study such things are probably right, and though a good chunk of it is cultural a perhaps larger chunk is due to different genetic averages.

I had a friend in Naval Nuclear Power School who flunked out. At one point his counselor sat him down and said something I'll never forget.

"Look son, you can be lazy and graduate from NNPS. You can be stupid and graduate from NNPS. But you can't be lazy and stupid."

You don't have to be a genius to get a math or engineering degree. People with very average intelligence can do just fine in STEM studies. People who've been given no work ethic, critical thinking skills, study skills and have no goals won't do well in any field. I blame culture.

In science and math, you actually have to know something - you can’t get a pass on ‘feelings’ or ‘social justice’ alone.

The answer— is in Charles Murray’s “The Bell Curve”

Lying bleeding in gutters and parks, beaten, maimed, or even killed by “real blacks” that can’t tolerate being “dissed” by oreo Uncle Toms, who value studying, hard work, and personal success; and don’t want to bragged down by welfare, drugs, gangs, early pregnancy, and general thuggery.

I wonder how much of that envy (and that is what it is) is at the root of black on black homicide rates, not counting turf wars and such.

When you see a black immigrant you are seeing the best and the brightest from his/her African birth country.

The dummies are not allowed to immigrate.

It’s a black thing, you wouldn’t understand (but apparently math isn’t required for understanding black things)

The situation is a shame. Where are the Black leaders??? It is tragic.

They have been effectively kow towed. Recently Dr Ben Carson and a decade ago Dr Bill Cosby spoke out about how the Black 'culture' is a detriment to the Black race. They spoke of the lack of parents' involvement, the lack of community leaders, the derogatory affect of the 'gangsta' attraction.

Those who have thusly spoken have been shouted down by the NAACP, the national media. Hence little has changed, little has been questioned nor examined. So much easier to fall back on the now 3rd generational 'victimhood' with its associated anger, resentment, depression, and dependency. So easy to be apathetic, uninvolved, and accept society's temporary safety nets and then, with political 'bribes', turn these temp safety nets into permanent hammocks.

I do recall that Math and abstract reasoning were their weak points but he considered them close to equal to whites in verbal skills.

Clearly, that proves conclusively the Thomas Jefferson was racist. The entire Congressional Black Caucus already knew that, since they were toddlers...

According to the newspaper, the tests are too hard.

Brave new world reality.
If some can't make the grade, blame the test. Reduce society to the least common denominator.
Guess what was the inspiration for the movie Idiocracy.

Unfortunately, some professions, which must meet standards on which people's lives depend, can't pretend it doesn't matter.

Uneducated, ignorant buffoons can never expect $80k or higher salaries, with or without a totally useless college PHD. Native American Lesbian Women's Studies??!!??
Medieval Discrimination Against Clowns and Actors Studies?

There are a few very limited exceptions. Sports or "Entertainment," where the average life expectancy is significantly below normal people's. Also drug dealers, muggers, kidnappers, bank robbers, carjackers, etc.

Actually, SAT scores actually track household income, and this is probably due to a greater emphasis on academic achievement in those households.

That is exactly the crux of the The Bell Curve" by Herrnstein and Murray, 1994. As I recall, it was 800+ pages of statistics, studies, footnotes and references. In fact its subtitle was, "Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life." (Emphasis mine)

Unfortunately, the book was unofficially banned, for one page in the book that was considered 'racist' even though based on overwhelming research, and the facts, it was not.

I must be one of a few hundred people in the entire country who actually read the entire book (in 1994) and realize why the book simply doesn't exist.

The summary? Middle class financially, with a middle class family (!) attitude towards manners, knowledge, effort and respect, for others and for intellectual excellence allowed American Blacks to achieve excellence like most other subcultures do.

I have no idea of what you just said.

I didn't either, at first. But a little digging revealed it is a language from the drug culture version of ebonics.
