There have been many ugly tweets and other nasty comments about the new Miss America, Syracuse, NY born and aspiring cardiologist Nina Davuluri. The former Miss New York is of Indian descent; many of the negative commenters thought she was Arab and/or Muslim. Not so incidentally there were also many positive tweets and comments.
Paradoxically, according to Malika Rao writing in The Huffington Post, Davuluri would never have won a similar pageant in her parents' native India because she was too...dark. Yes, even in India, skin color is important--the lighter the better.
But there was an unfortunate irony to the win, noted mostly by Indian and Indian-American writers. Davuluri is dark-skinned. In India, where skin color is a national obsession, you likely wouldn't see someone of her complexion in a pageant, much less winning one.

Writing at FirstPost, Lakshmi Chaudhury quipped that Indians prefer their beauty queens "vanilla, preferably accessorised with blue contact lenses."
And to get that vanilla shade, beauty contestants in India, and apparently other women, take some drastic steps. In a previous Miss India contest Every contestant was "taking some sort of medication to alter her skin, particularly in colour" according to the embedded writer, Susan Runkle. Indeed, the winner that year, Sonali Nagrani, looks more European than Indian.

I had no idea they judge each other by the color of their skin - ..I had a girlfriend in the Phillipines that I used to take to a resort in the Phillipines in 1970, called Blue Beach. I liked the sun and water. I bought a bikini for her and told her to wear it when we were going out on a boat or beach. She always threw a towel or a robe on herself. When I asked why? she said “I don’t want to look Black.” I couldn’t explain that a tan(?) made her look extremely vivacious. She got killed taking a boat to Cebu to tell her family she was getting married.

Maybe you should take a look at some of he brightest students coming out of schools these days. A lot of them are Indian-Americans and a lot of them are Chinese and Phillipino Americans.

I really DOUBT most of today’s losers in Europe - all lily-white- are better timber for American than a LOT of the people coming out of Asia. If you think you can look to western Europe as a source of people who think like Americans, you are sadly mistaken.

I think some people are just stupid. A person lives in this country, and they want to try to win “miss America”, they have every right to do so, and it makes no difference what their cultural heritage is.

I don’t know why it would matter if an american of arab descent, or an american who practices the muslim faith, was able to win a beauty contest.
Well, actually I’m lily-white and I helped kill civilization and I leave others to determine who of us is the real jerek.
I want a white woman to enter the black miss america contest, claiming that they “identify” as black.
Of course, I told my daughter she should apply for all the minority scholarships, and on the forms say she “identifies” as whatever it takes to get the scholarship.
Be careful, you will upset the “REAL” Americans. (Sarcasm)
