There have been many ugly tweets and other nasty comments about the new Miss America, Syracuse, NY born and aspiring cardiologist Nina Davuluri. The former Miss New York is of Indian descent; many of the negative commenters thought she was Arab and/or Muslim. Not so incidentally there were also many positive tweets and comments.
Paradoxically, according to Malika Rao writing in The Huffington Post, Davuluri would never have won a similar pageant in her parents' native India because she was too...dark. Yes, even in India, skin color is important--the lighter the better.
But there was an unfortunate irony to the win, noted mostly by Indian and Indian-American writers. Davuluri is dark-skinned. In India, where skin color is a national obsession, you likely wouldn't see someone of her complexion in a pageant, much less winning one.

Writing at FirstPost, Lakshmi Chaudhury quipped that Indians prefer their beauty queens "vanilla, preferably accessorised with blue contact lenses."
And to get that vanilla shade, beauty contestants in India, and apparently other women, take some drastic steps. In a previous Miss India contest Every contestant was "taking some sort of medication to alter her skin, particularly in colour" according to the embedded writer, Susan Runkle. Indeed, the winner that year, Sonali Nagrani, looks more European than Indian.

And the white chick is five times hotter than the others. I realize that ‘hot’ isn’t a criteria, necessarily. She may be dumber than a bag of hammers, but . . .
Sorry CoC....fingers worked quicker than the mind on that one.
By “her actions” I meant that her celebration of her culture (notice I didn’t say American culture), once again, is a reminder of what is being set aside: Traditional American Culture.
The culture of the people who created the greatest super power the world had ever know and are now, when not being ridiculed in popular culture, are actively being replaced by our government’s immigration practices.
While I know the new Miss America only intended to win a talent show, people have every right to resent someone dancing on their cultural grave.
I’ve been using that wherever possible for few decades now.
It still annoys my wife. She is very rules-compliant.
But "Traditional American Culture" wasn't set aside, nor was she "dancing on [anyone's] cultural grave." There was plenty of traditional american culture on display during the talent portion of the pageant: singing and dancing to American music, tap dancing, musical performances, baton twirling, and so on. There were also a handful of performances of different origins: Irish step dancing, ballet, and, yes Bollywood dancing.
The point is, that IS "American culture." American culture (and particularly music/dancing/performaces/etc) has always involved an element of borrowing from others.
This logic exposes the flaw in multiculturalism. “All culture is American culture” = no American culture.
I understand your other point about plenty of traditional American culture being in the show but so what? People only reacted strongly to the one.
Multiculturalism breed conflict, breeds resentment, breeds hatred and ultimately violence. History repeats this over & over.
You’re missing the bigger conversation here...

OK. Assuming all of this to be universally true, what's your solution?
For now? Yell and throw rocks!...lol
Honestly, I don’t know. I would slow immigration down to a trickle & promote English as an official language but that’s about all I’ve got. The horse may have left the barn by now.
I do know joining in & pretending we’re special, that history will be different because we’re “special” won’t help anything.
Muslim is not a race.
Well said. I second the motion.
What you are claiming is that the US has no identity, no culture, nothing and that it is defined by any foreigner coming here and claiming their previous culture is ours.
“Why not take her at her word? “
Because she still acts like an Indian. Sorry, can’t be an Indian but claim to be an American. We DO have a culture. If you don’t think so then you must believe any American girl can win an Indian contest without any problems. Acceptance of all cultures within the US is forsaking our own culture. This acceptance of anything and everything is not healthy for our culture. It is saying we shouldn’t have borders either, but any nation without a border isn’t a nation.
Meh, do not want, bring me Miss Kansas..............
How does she "act[] like an Indian"?
yeah, unlike America that has millions of weak men addicted to porn. Have to see those bright women in bikinis! Oh boy.
No. What I am claiming is that American identity is flexible enough that it doesn't require--and, indeed, has NEVER required--people to abandon their roots abroad, be it food, music, art, or the like. What I am claiming is that American culture is strong enough that it is not threatened by a beauty pageant contestant performing a Bollywood dance.
