I’m not an expert on skyscrapers, but I suspect this problem may not be quite as bad as it is presented here.

“The original design obviously included specifications for an elevator big enough for a 20-storey building. In the process of scaling things up, however, nobody thought to redesign the elevator system—and, naturally, a 47-storey building requires more space for its lifts and motor equipment.”

I suppose a higher elevator would require thicker cables and a bigger motor, but that shouldn’t be a problem. I suspect that the problem is that with twice as many people using it, they would want more elevators in service next to each other, so you wouldn’t have to wait a long time to catch one. Four cars instead of two, or whatever. If so, then this would just mean long waits, not 42 flights of stairs to the top.
