Went to the mail box and was aggressed by new neighbors Pit Bull (Freeper opinions requested)
Posted on 08/07/2013 6:37:18 PM PDT by RoosterRedux
I retired 10 years ago to take of elderly parents. Dad died peacefully last year and Mom is still kicking.
After spending the afternoon in the eye doc's office with Mom, came home and, after settling her down, went for the mail.
New neighbor has a Pit-Bull and today this dog was loose. As I went to the mail box, the dog ran over to the middle of the street (perhaps 15 feet away) and bared his teeth.
His owners were in the yard but did not call the dog. At the same time a UPS truck stop in front of their house, but the driver refused to get out of his truck.
Question is "what steps do I take as a good citizen?"
The next door neighbors inherited the house from the girl's grandmother. The girl's husband is a born again Christian...but he was previously in prison for drugs.
Pit Bull is young but large and aggressive.
Freeper opinions appreciated.
BTW, I have cats who lounge around in the front yard. If this dog kills my cats...I am apt to become upset. And an upset Freeper (armed to the teeth) is not a nice thing to behold.

I have cats who are my friends for life. My cats never leave my yard (and seldom go outside)...so I don’t want a friendly pit bull in the yard.

Why is there this disconnect about the responsiblity here? Did you read the original post about the situation?
Liking or disliking dogs isn’t the issue. It isn’t RR’s job to make a “friend for life” out of someone else’s aggressive pet. It’s the pet owners job to keep the pet on his own property. And in a subdivision-style neighborhood, especially, with other people and children in closer quarters, it’s imperative that anyone keeping a well-known aggressive breed be absolutely on top of the situation. If not, they have only themselves to blame when neighbors take responsibility for the safety of their families.

I have no idea what prompted your response, but I sincerely hope that we are not now, nor will we ever be, neighbors. Have a wonderful day.

If you don’t believe that a pet owners job is to keep the pet on his own property, then I hope not, too.
Sheesh!

Theres enough studies, numbers and charts on the internet for me to match you one on one all night long.
There were a couple of us that used to post new pitt bull attacks on children links almost every day on here. They were not even hard to come up with but those too were always excused by people who believe in emotions and not facts.
Is this something we need to go back to doing?

Take your anger elsewhere.

No anger, just incredulity at the apparent disconnect about where responsibility for this pet lies, a pet who has already been aggressive with the OP.

Talk to the neighbor, if you can approach the house, or call them on the phone if you have the number.
If that doesn’t work, call Animal Control.
If that doesn’t work, call 911.
If that doesn’t work, document that you took every step, then go out and shoot it if it is in the street.
Minimum force necessary to compel compliance.

You are truly the stereotypical low class kind of person who owns a pit bull.Spoken like a true girly boy.
I bet you take it over to michael vicks house to fight on friday nights.
Just to watch your wife in action.

So you two asswipes were there?I live in the real world. If my pit or now deceased GSD decided to bite your face off you wouldn't have a face. You clearly have no clue how strong a big dog really is.
Is that so hard for you to understand?

Our neighbors lack common sense and it is not unusual for their dogs to come into our yard. Mutual neighbors have complained a number of times about their dogs to the authorities, but not much has happened as a result. It is my belief that having neighbors who are openly hostile can be extremely unpleasant. Fortunately, we have a six-foot chain link fence surrounding part of our property, which includes the area directly behind the house, and we have done our best to sustain an amicable relationship with them.
Best of luck to you.

Let's see, a big ugly bulldog that bites women in the face.
hmmm..... seems like its got the majority of the traits of a land shark to me after reading the Aurora Muni code:
'"Pit bull" for purposes of this chapter, is defined as any dog that is an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or ANY DOG DISPLAYING THE MAJORITY OF PHYSICAL TRAITS OR GENETIC MARKERS OF ANY ONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE BREEDS, or any dog exhibiting those distinguishing characteristics which substantially conform to the standards established by the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club for any of the above breeds. As I was reading through websites yesterday, I found a few pleas from animal shelters for help placing pit bulls in adoptive homes. The pits were by far the most common dog brought to the shelter (or abandoned) and they were the hardest to place in adoptive homes. Therefore they were the dog most often euthanized.

Its depressing but less so then a mauled child.

Walking around with a pocket full of dog biscuits is a neat idea, but why not go one step further, and dress yourself completely in meat?
Being completely covered in meat would definately make you popular with a loose pit bull. I guess that's why Lady Gaga wears meat dresses..
