I recently heard of a never-married over-40 woman who adopted a child (and had never in years past expressed any genuine desire for babies and children), and I wonder if it was for the same reasons.

Bingo! We had this in our family with the in-law women. Everyone got along well enough until the parents got old and starting making plans. Then, what a mess.
