I personally think her “change of heart” had more to do with her parents and his parents making out their wills. I believe they were giving bigger percentages to the children who had children. Made sense to me because they wanted those children to have larger “nest eggs” to pay for braces, schooling, etc..

I recently heard of a never-married over-40 woman who adopted a child (and had never in years past expressed any genuine desire for babies and children), and I wonder if it was for the same reasons.

Maybe she was waiting for Mr. Right and he never appeared. However, I do know a lot of people who arrange their will distribution based on need rather than an equal split. Many grandparents want their grandchildren the ability to get college or just some better things in life.

Unless she stands to inherit a small fortune, that's a terrible "investment". Kids are expensive (or so I've heard).
