One evening when she was 14 years old, Laura Scott was washing dishes in the kitchen with her mother when she decided she didn't want to have a child. At 26, Scott got married and waited for her mind to change. "It never happened," she says. "And I realized I was going to be fine." Now 50, Scott is more than fine: she's fulfilled. And she's not alone. The birthrate in the U.S. is the lowest in recorded American history. From 2007 to 2011, the most recent year for which there's data, the fertility rate declined 9%. A 2010 Pew Research report showed that childlessness has risen across all racial and ethnic groups, adding up to about 1 in 5 American women who end their childbearing years maternity-free, compared with 1 in 10 in the 1970s.

It has a number of names: Disobedience, selfishness, demographics, it all adds up to the next generation paying the price for your lifestyle. God help us? Not likely!
...and when I say your lifestyle, it is general, not specific.
Go boomers! You rule!
And because of women like her we have illegal immigrants flooding into this country doing the work she wouldn’t do.
Do I really need to add the /sarc tag...
Good heavens. Well considering that the marriage rate is falling and the out-of-wedlock birth rate with a great chance for life in poverty is soaring it is difficult to think of a worse reason for having kids than doing it to send a message on immigration.
Yes...I am not unhappy when selfish, narcissistic, and likely commie lib types do not have babies. Let the conservative, constitution loving folks have oodles of them!!!
There are also conservative, constitution loving folk who have no desire to have children. Mind you, as long as you support your kids without government assistance, I don't have the slightest problem with someone having as my kids as they like...just as I have no problem with someone having no children.
I'm single, and likely to remain so. Being responsible for a child would be enormously irresponsible in my case, which is why I will almost certainly never have any.
Well...that, and the fact that I don't want any to begin with. :-)
I must be talking about liberals!!

Or, in this case. . .a woman.
Isn’t it ironic that for its article on the childfree lifestyle that Time magazine shows on its cover a couple including a woman whose buxomness practically screams fecundity & motherhood?
And even those who have children, might now need to worry whether those adult children will take care of them ...
... I read an article somewhere about a growing trend of adult children abandoning their elderly parents to the tender care of the State.
Although the article didn't give a theory as to why this should be, I immediately thought, "This is the day care generation." I.e., children who were abandoned to day care centers when they were small, will not bond properly with their parents -- and may not feel any particular duty toward them when their parents become old and infirm.
One more comment re the linked article in Time mag:
With fertility treatment widely available...even clinically infertile women have more options than ever to become mothers...
The "Time" writer neglects to mention something important: That we now know that some infertility treatments, e.g. IVF, run a high risk of producing children with a variety of physical and mental problems.
Best post of the week....
I would not want a life without children. I would have done anything to be a mother. It was my number one goal since my own childhood. And it’s true: it is the most fulfilling, satisfying thing in life to me. I fought infertility and won. It isn’t everything but to me, parenthood nearly is everything.
For instance, have you noticed that every time a celebrity has a baby, it's either a "surprise" or a "miracle"? Never, "Like, duh ... when a man and a woman have sex, this is what happens!"
