Who is having children and who is not?

Our first foster daughter (age 14 at the time) made it very clear that she wanted to get pregnant as soon as possible so she could collect welfare like her 18 year old sister and live off the government.

3 years later my wife saw her at the local grocery pushing a stroller and buying pampers.

And just think...it's our tax dollars that make this possible.

Dependency on government breeds more dependency. Rather literally, in some cases.

BTW, kudos to you and your wife hosting foster children. From what I've read, it's an enormous effort and responsibility to undertake.

An 18 year old buying pampers on welfare beats the heck out of a woman getting her 4th abortion on her way to a cruise

I can't imagine any circumstance, welfare state or not, where anyone would need your approval. Thus your unsolicited permissiveness is unappreciated.

Well as he was responding to a pointed lack of permissiveness towards not having children himself, his response was not only relevent, but rather eloquent.

Do try to keep up.

Now, as for “disobedience”...that’s a bit of a stretch, isn’t it? Who exactly am I being disobedient towards?

There is a reason it is number one on the list.

A rereading of the Book of Genesis will reveal that God commanded Adam and Eve to multiply and replenish the earth. Most agree that was not a command to Adam and Eve only but to their posterity for as long as man is privileged to reside on our excellent habitation. Some choose not to believe but that is the genesis (no pun intended) of disobedience.

"Couple that with unstable work environment robbing you of confidence in the future can easily kill any nascent need to have children until the time is long past. "

Sounds like cowardice to me: having children and raising them properly is basic to our design and a fundamental responsibility. Fear for the future is a false justification for failing to saddle up to our raison d'etre. We both know that this society is big on cowardice and self-indulgence - they don't need any more encouragement to go gutless on us.

We need more descendants of our founders, not abnegation to the nonfunctional and prolific among us.

Nope, nobody. His line ended with him. He wanted to have somebody to keep his flight jacket and other memories but his life ended and his memorabilia went in a garage sale.

Guess he made a bad choice in marriage.

This is nothing but urban liberal crap, defending themselves against being judged against norms; so that they can defend their selfish indulgent lifestyles without being labelled an “old maid” or a “cat lady”. And take a look at the squishy beta males in the article going along with it....

One of the symptoms of a civilization in decline. So many ramifcations...sex is only for the temporary enjoyment and has nothing to do with reproduction, which leads to abortion, sex without marriage, promiscuity and ultimately all manner of perversions. After all, the goal of sex is just your own personal gratification, right? Has nothing to do with biology or parenthood any more - what to speak of that ancient concept "morality". Keep in mind - Moslems are breeding like bunny rabbits...

I know there are many worldly reasons for avoiding sex outside of marriage, but the only reason I really have to know is that God forbids it. Even if I could discern no negative repercussions for it, I trust the Lord.

I gotta hand it to you. That’s an excellent point! The writers and readers of Time are doing us all a big favor. Thank you, Time!

Time is an illustration of self-extinction, and perhaps a symbol of its readership in general.

Funny, because I wish we could have had more. However, what you say is true for some people.

At the time of my second wedding I brought two and she brought 2. The youngest was 19 at the time. I doubled my family size on that day. Hers introduce me as dad and I like that. I think of them as my kids too, but I never wanted to raise young ones from birth after doing that twice.

My ex had nine brothers and sisters. I loved them all as my own sisters and brothers. It was a family to be admired. Mother never worked outside the home. All went to catholic school and most graduated college. Two very high up in major corporations.

Miss that family, but 10 kids was not for me.

GeronL: “if not having children means killing numerous babies in the womb, you are definitely disobeying God”

If it also means having sex outside of wedlock, that’s also sin. I’m always amazed at Christian parents who tell their children to wait for marriage until the children have established careers. These same parents often look the other way while their children engage in obviously intimate relationships with the opposite sex.

I guess the point I’m making is this: it’s far more important to do the right thing than to be rich, powerful, well established, or whatever. The human body is well prepared to reproduce at a young age. There’s something inherently evil about a society that tells people to postpone marriage and children until 30.

Chainmail: “Too good a family/genetic chain to deadend so I can buy a BMW.”

Bump! Those who reproduce own the future. I know several good Christian families who are doing their part to make the future. Those who don’t have children better hope and pray other people aren’t so selfish, because someone has to make the children that the selfish narcissists are counting on to wipe their butts when they’re old and gray. Shoot! Maybe Obamacare isn’t so bad after all. A shot of morphine and one more useless leftist is sent to their secular god...

(that last part was sarcasm)
