CHELMSFORD, Mass. - Only three years or so since first picking up the game of chess, 9-year-old Carissa Yip can already look down at 93 percent of the more than 51,000 players registered with the U.S. Chess Federation.

She has risen so far up the rankings that she has reached the expert level at a younger age than anyone since the chess federation began electronic record-keeping in 1991, a new level she reached in recent weeks.

She later demonstrated her ability by playing with her back to the board, reading her moves to her father and keeping track of the whole board in her head. She has been called an intimidating player in an ironic way, because she’s far short of even 5 feet tall.

Scary good.

Around 10 years ago, I bought one of those electronic computerized chess games. I could not beat it on the dumbest setting even tho I think it had something like 30 different skill levels.

She would beat me so bad I wouldn’t even think about playing her.

I was the checker champ of the 5th grade tho. I won a weeks pass to the local theater.

I wonder if she is one of those gifted people, who grow up and design satellites and other complex machines? I heard guys like Tessla could design and test machines in his head.

Now why is it that before reading a word of the article simply by reading the headline I knew she would be Asian?

I just read this on Drudge. I am so jealous. Ronin and I often play chess, and he whoops my ass 9 out of 10 games. Now this little champ comes up and kills us both. I hope she has an awesome career as a master if she and her parents can handle it.

That's odd. I turned Kate down and in her sorrow she turned to Will.

Is she still upset about me?

In chess the normally recognized milestones are Master ranking (ELO 2200+) or Grandmaster (GM) Title. (Expert ranking falls in the range 2000-2199).

Sammy Reshevsky, a chess child prodigy who astounded the world with his playing prowess at 8yoa, eventually became one of the strongest GMs, competing in candidate tournaments and matches. I saw Sammy in Pasadena (Langham Huntington) in the 80s playing in a Swiss Tournament. This was just before the histioric hotel closed. He was very old and, like the hotel, had seen better days. But he, Capablanca and Fischer were subjects of a work by Reinfeld “Great Games by Chess Prodigies.” Many beautiful games.

New chess talent. Looking for the next Bobby Fischer?
