Fell asleep driving across Alligator Alley, woke up to see an oncoming car right in front of me.
Don’t know how I woke or how it missed us.
That happened to me driving across west Texas with the cruise control on. The wide apron with rumble strips saved me. I had been asleep long enough to be dreaming. Waking up from a dream behind the wheel of a car headed off the road was a real shock. Traffic was thankfully very sparse and there was little to hit other than low scrub, but still. I won’t use cruise to this day because of it.
About a week before I took a trip on that road, I read a story about how there had been many accidents on the Naples side where there was a sharp curve where four lanes went to two. They were constructing I-75 at the time. Coming back home I got to that point and slowed down because I remembered that story. I saw a car starting to spin out coming toward me. I stopped and the spinning car stopped right in front of me.
I once did something similar after staying up all night with a new girlfriend.
I was on my driver route at work the next day, and fell asleep behind the wheel on a lonely and peaceful country road. Woke up just in time to see a telephone pole coming at me at 60 mph.
I never yanked a steering wheel so hard!
