-- The roadblocks went up on a Friday at several points in two Alabama towns, about 40 miles on either side of Birmingham.
For the next two days, off-duty sheriff's deputies in St. Clair County, to the east, and Bibb County, to the southwest, flagged down motorists and steered them toward federal highway safety researchers. The researchers asked them a few questions about drinking and drug use and asked them for breath, saliva and blood samples -- offering them $10 for saliva and $50 to give blood.
It's not just in Alabama. The roadblocks are part of a national study led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is trying to determine how many drivers are on the road with drugs or alcohol in their systems. Similar roadblocks will be erected in dozens of communities across the nation this year, according to the agency.

Clearly they chose it to test local compliance.
Clearly they deemed it successful enough to escalate. Honestly, some of these news stories are plain creepy/scary in the implications.

Having grown up in Oklahoma & Texas, I can assure you that all a dry county does is make it so that people who drink have to drive farther to get their alcohol.

You want some DNA, officer? Here ya go. Hope you don't mind it in brown. You're giving them a stool sample?

You may have a point there. I remember when PA had a drinking age of 21 and West Virginia was 18. The only thing scarier than teenage kids driving drunk was kids driving FORTY MILES to get their booze and then driving back drunk.

Im curious about the legality of off duty police obstructing State Roads
Next point - what happens say if one of them gets accidentally injured in the process.

We drove a lot farther than 40 miles at times to get the stronger beer in Texas, which was easier than trying to find a liquor store in Oklahoma that would sell to us when we were underage. Didn’t hurt that at the time, there was no open container law in Texas.
Glad I’m not that young and stupid anymore. Well, at least not that young.

In 1958 an Ala. cop in St. Clair County was pretty understanding and send me on my way around 1 AM after stopping me obviously drunk, disheveled, driving slowly on the shoulder with lights out.
My girlfriend and I lived in Calhoun County to the east (I think only three counties were wet at the time) and had gone to B'ham for an evening of jazz and drinks. I was 21 but she was younger and hadn't drunk alcohol, while I had had quite a few. She had been driving and I was sleeping in the back when my '58 VW bug with manually switchable gas reserve ran out of gas. It was a bit tricky to get started again if you didn't switch immediately. She didn't normally drive, didn't have a license and didn't know what to do, which was turn off the lights, turn the lever, and drive in first gear using the starter until the engine started. She got into the passenger seat and I had just started driving when the cop showed up.
I showed him my license and explained the situation, leaving out only her not having a license, and said she was going to take over again as soon as I got it started.
The cop said it sounded like a good plan, and stayed long enough to see us off with her driving.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Texas was one of their targets.
Just the other day, a mother was arrested in Texas for demanding that she be shown an arrest warrant for her minor child.
The problem? No warrant, so the mother was arrested in retaliation.

More likely, building T-800s and T-1000s.
They do need to look human to successfully infiltrate us after all.

We need more peace officers like that, and fewer LEOs as we have today.
