Alligator Threatening People Shot & Killed By Daytona Beach Sergeant

Daytona Beach, FL - A large alligator was shot and killed by a Daytona Beach police officer after it allegedly made threatening moves against nearby residents.
In his monthly “Ask The Chief” appearance on WNDB’s Marc Bernier program, Daytona Beach police chief Mike Chitwood says the incident started around 12:43pm Friday at a retention pond on the 1000 block of George W. Engram Boulevard.
“There’s a woman who said that her kids had been going in through the hole in the fence and feeding the gator and poking it with a stick,” Chitwood told Bernier.

I realized I lived in a different world when I went to the county fair in south Florida (moved last year, went to the fall fair) and bought the kids a carnival food booth item with gator bites in it.
Fried gator nuggets in a paper cup. Yeah baby!

It's Florida, so just assume that every freshwater locale (and a few saltwater locales) will have at least one large alligator, and maybe a few small ones you don't see. They tend towards shyness, but like bears, you can draw them out.
Oddly, though, when I was growing up, they were nearly exterminated from Florida!

I read it to mean that people who were threatening the alligator -alligator threatening people- were shot and killed. This is EXACTLY why I tell my kids NOT to threaten alligators!

geez...”poking an alligator with a stick”...there’s a Bugs Bunny cartoon like that — and it didn’t have a very good ending...who does that? ...I did my fair share of stupid stuff when I was a kid - like chase water snakes down the creek throwing rocks...but I wasn’t in danger of being eaten by the snake!...today’s kids...

I had some barbecued chicken last week. Oddly enough, it tasted a lot like alligator.

Can’t say that I have been *to* Daytona....been *through* Daytona, on my way to somewhere else.
A friend, asks me to go...every year ... he goes down for the week ....to the raceway....NASCAR doesn’t interest me...if it was F1....different story.
Dispatching this ‘gator was a good thing....prevented some future ugliness.
