Why Are So Many Dogs Being Shot by Police?
Pets Adviser ^ | May 6, 2013 | Pets Adviser

On a chilly night in late February in Fishers, Ind., Patricia McConnell was taking her daughter’s 7-year-old, 20-pound terrier mix, Reese, out for a midnight potty.

Reese was harnessed and on a retractable leash, but as she bounded ahead around a corner, the dog saw a neighbor and started to bark. Unfortunately, this neighbor was Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal William “Buzz” Brown. Reese was able to bark only two times before the deputy shot the leashed dog twice.

Brown, who says he felt threatened, was two feet away from the dog when he thought she might attack him. Amazingly, Reese survived. However, because she was shot at such a close range, Reese’s front left leg and shoulder had to be removed, and her back left leg was left shattered. The vet bills reached $10,000.

Patricia McConnell said the shooting was so unexpected that she feared that if she said anything, the officer would fire at her as well. Her daughter, Deborah Twitty, told Fox59 that they live in fear of their neighbor. “I’m afraid he’s going to retaliate,” she said of the deputy.

if’you compare how well ccw folks shoot versus cops, ccw shoot better andhit their targets more often and use less bullets to stop threats than leos do. the reason why leos win aren’t because they are better shots.

I didn’t mean to vapor-lock you, e-12. There’s a larger point here.

We aren’t defenseless ‘subjects’ who would stand around while savages hacked a man’s head off. Or for that matter, while a skittish lawman shot our hairy best friend because it surprised him.
I do carry a little plastic bag on our walks. In a little zippered pouch next to the .45. Shake it off FRiend.

If you feel threatened by the cop pointing his gun at you, you can fire back as self defense.

This happened in Indiana. So, actually, you can't.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/05/16/indiana-court-strips-citizens-of-right-to-resist-unlawful-police-entry/

This is why police are dangerous, and why we are seeing abuses of power and lack of accountability. It is the State that makes this so. Increasingly, the State believes itself to be at risk from its citizens, and its proliferation of laws and acquisition of arms is accompanied by attempts to restrict citizens' rights and abilities to defend themselves.

What is it about dogs that makes them attack cops?

My grandpa said, many times, that dogs are usually excellent judges of character -- given the sort of power-without-accountability that the police position has become it's obviously going to (a) attract people of unsavory character, and/or (b) corrupt [some of] those of good character -- as the saying goes: power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Interesting to note is the shift in terminology, police used to be called "peace officers" (and "officers of the law")... now they are called "Law Enforcement" -- the word 'enforce' has forceful connotations the other two do not.

In Stacy's rant about her rambunctious pit bull, Kincaid, she noted that:

"... Kincaid was a strong boy, and with two young children around, I had found it could be a little much. He loved the kids greatly, but there were times when he didn’t know his own strength and would knock them over playing."

Or stripping them of parts--a face, a hand, a leg ...

She just didn't take ownership of a pit bull seriously.

Pit bulls are such loving, comfy kids dogs --- /s

Large breed dogs (and larger smaller breeds) can knock children over while playing, or pin them down while displaying friendly, cheerful behavior.

Cynophobia, even selective cynophobia, spreads fear, not education and reason.

Shot a black dog in the pitch dark, two feet from its owner without hitting anything else, no less.

Dude should up for sniper duty.

He’s good.

My 100 pound Dobe adores kids to the point of idiocy.

He has learned to be careful around small beings..but he wasn’t always.

The kids would laugh when they landed on their pamper-padded bottoms and haul themselves back up by his collar for more face-slurping.

Sweet departed Halla would freeze totally still while they patted and hugged her.

Amazingly, she really didn’t ~like~ being hugged on and wouldn’t even let us do it..but kids..she was like a happy statue.

Police shoot dogs because they can. Dogs can’t shoot back, file charges, file a lawsuit, complain to the news media.

Cops win most gun fights. They get free bullets to practice and they practice a lot.

Having been at the range next to uniformed and plainclothes cops a number of times, most of them can’t hit the broad side of anything, much less a barn.
