NBC ^ | 4/29/13

Posted on 04/29/2013 5:21:18 AM PDT by SoFloFreeper

The Tim Tebow era is over in New York.

The Jets have released Tebow, the New York Post is reporting.

Tebow was widely expected to be on the way out for months, and the only surprise is that the Jets waited until now to do it. The arrival of rookie quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft may have been what it took for the Jets to decide that there was simply no room for Tebow on the roster anymor

YOU are the lunatic. THE ONLY REASON TIM TEBOW WAS CUT WAS THAT HE IS AN OUTSPOKEN CHRISTIAN! This is Rome in the time of Christ ALL OVER AGAIN. The apostists are throwing Christians into the Colleseum, and to the lions. WHEN WILL YOU STOP PERSECUTING MY PEOPLE????

Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. —Matthew 5:10-12

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. -2 Corinthians 4:8-11

Tebow is never going to be a “great” QB by himself, but he has certain abilities that were rare. Most commenters here are looking at Tebow by himself, but they haven’t considered how he could have been used.

A QB that has the ability to scramble, and scramble frequently, forces the defense to hold a linebacker near the line. This opens up the potential for a lot of short passes.

To the best of my knowledge, the Jets never made use of Tebow’s ability and willingness to scramble. Tebow is big, fast and agile. I don’t think they ever had Tebow as main QB with Sanchez as a potential flea-flicker.

With the right coaching, Tebow could make any other mediocre QB (like Sanchez) into a productive QB. The Jets didn’t have the right coaching. Some speculate that it was political...I simply think Rex Ryan didn’t have the guts to be innovative.

This was an active effort to diminish his light and his opportunity to shine in the NFL.

I believe your tin foil hat is on too tight

The Jets could have let him go, or traded him long ago, but wanted to limit his future opportunities and the attention focused on him.

As a Gator fan and also a huge Tebow fan, I’ll have to side with the Jets on this. He’s an interesting player with the talent to play in the NFL. The question is at what position. Perhaps he can find a NFL team that runs a college type spread offense that would enable him to shine as a QB but I doubt it. Or perhaps he’ll sign with a team that will request he change positions. Won’t be the first time that has ever happened to a hot shot college QB.

Denver knew Tebow wasn't the answer at QB even while he was on his winning streak.

Yeah but did Denver even know why they believed Tebow wasn't the answer? Everyone points to the throwing mechanics and accuracy but look at how many times he was sacked and hurried. Then compare that against Manning through the first 5 games of 2012 when the Broncos were 2-3.

I have a strong suspicion the Broncos were blaming Tebows production on Tebow rather than looking at the offensive line which is what they were forced to do once they realized Manning was going down 3x per game and had a worse record than Tebow.

The Jets are a circus. They thrive on being a circus. They thirst for headlines. Drafting Sanchez (who wasn't ready to be a starter), trading for Tebow (who did not fit their team at all), drafting Smith (who is a developmental player). It's all about headlines. What other team has had a news conference for their backup quarterback two years in a row? I'm amazed they didn't round out the draft with Te'o and the Honey Badger.

The weird party is they aren't that far away from being a good team. A few decent pieces and a lot of medication and they could make the playoffs.

That being said there were good football and financial reasons to cut Tebow. I hope he lands somewhere with a sane franchise and gets a chance to contribute in some way.

Just look at the Draft. Tyrann Mathieu was picked long before Barrett Jones, the most decorated center ever. He is clearly a better player and a better human being off the field. The honey badger is a drugged out thug who has some talent. Roger Goodell and the NFL are mainly interested in thugball.

“Sacking Tebow is much more difficult than sacking Manning”

not necessarily. Passing QBs avoid sacks by staying in the pocket and making quick downfield decisions. Running QBs are very quick to pull the ball down and run. This might avoid sacks if he makes the line of scrimmage, but blocking for a pass is different than blocking for a run so the line was less effective.

Running QBs are a dime a dozen in college, and worth even less in the pros. A lot of people don’t realize the skill differential from college to pro, at every position.

the NFL is a downfield, air strike, big-play league. Tebow is not in the top 100 QBs in terms of NFL skills.

He was offered other positions, but turned them down. A big part of Tebow’s talent involves inspiring others to play to the best of their ability and not giving up. He can’t do that as well from other positions. That’s part of the reason that he didn’t do as well at the Jets as he did at the Broncos. It takes time for a team to trust a new quarterback, let alone be inspired by one, and he just wasn’t given that time.

"The apostists are throwing Christians into the Colleseum, and to the lions."

In the NFL being thrown to the Lions is a reward not a punishment. Sort of like a bye week but you still get a "win" added to your record.

In related news, my Vikings drafted a punter in the fifth round with the thought being that Chris “I Won’t Shut Up About Gay ‘Marriage’” Kluwe might be gone.

So Elway hated Tim Tebow so bad, the guy who had just resurrected his season and gave him a playoff win and the money that comes with it, that he sabotaged his career by sending him to New York. Oh boy.

Tebow was a McDaniels pick. Elway wasn't put in as head of Football Operations until the next year. Tebow's future as a Bronco was essentially dead once that happened, and her performance as QB didn't do anything to change that. Have decided to get rid of Tebow why did he send him to New York, which didn't need a starter, if he was interested in promoting Tebow's chances?

Yeah but did Denver even know why they believed Tebow wasn't the answer?

There are 32 teams in the league, many are desperate for good players. Apparently, none want Tebow at the moment. It isn't because he's a Christian. He isn't being blackballed. The NFL is a violent sport where every player is one hit away from a career ending injury. That is one reason there are LOTS of outspoken Christians in the league. If teams felt Tebow could add value, they'd grab him up as fast as possible. Apparently the Jets couldn't find a single team that wanted to trade for him.

Tebow probably isn't a starting caliber quarterback - at least from what teams see on tape and hear from those who've played/coached around him. If Tebow is willing (and happy) to be a backup somewhere and maybe play TE in some packages, he may get picked up.

True but when you also consider Manning's fast release, for defenders to get their hands on Manning so often, the Broncos OL couldn't have been putting up much resistance.

You nailed it. NFL teams will sign and play Ted Bundy if he can help them win games. The only religion that matters in the NFL is winning.

Agreed. The two things that people seem to constantly miss are

1. Anyone who’s ever seen Tebow practice has said that it’s painful to watch. It’s that bad. And practice makes a big difference - you play the way you practice.

2. The fact that he “lifted” his team up when he was inserted into the lineup in Denver - some of this is like saying a craps player has a “hot hand”. People want to assign a reason to something that has a certain amount of randomness associated with it.
