Question: can someone explain to me the demographic switch of the solid south?
April 18, 2013 | epsdude

Sorry for this unusual post. I'm probably the youngest one this site so you can imagine I've got a lot to learn in politics, but one thing has always puzzled me.

I know that Republicans broke away from the Whigs to oppose the pro-slavery Democrats but the change in party demographics since then has perplexed me.

I recently saw this picture: http://manwiththemuckrake.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/slavery-2012.jpg

I'm just curious, what caused such a radical shift in the solid south? Some people accredit this to an 'ideological party switch' but that seems rather implausible to me. So what did cause this arbitrary shift and, also why did the black vote slowly drift over to the Democrats?

Thanks.

Damn, that’s impressive.

I’m thinking about doing Masters T&F after I finish school. I’m obviously not college age. (38) Have you ever thought about doing any masters track?

They are still overrepresented ~ but you’re assuming that California will always continue to receive a quota of imported water. You guys give up the ghost and hand it over to La Raza and there won’t be enough people living there to tend a flock of tame geese.

I have arthritis and can barely get around at times. Also put on weight. I could pretty much keep up with the college age kids in most sports until maybe age 45.

Actually I just took my second lortab in the last few hours. Will take another by bedtime. Obviously not going to be competitive even with guys my own age.

I knew some blacks left during the Depression but didn’t realize it was that much.

I guess the New Deal wins again!!

So it’s no coincidence that Harlem peaked at about that time as one of the nicest and safest neighborhoods in the world.

Imported water? La Raza?

I thought your point was that blacks totally own the democrat party and are “40% of the Democrat vote overall”,
or “Blacks are today THE DEMOCRAT PARTY itself.”.

Weird, it must be why Mississippi with it’s 37.3% black population goes republican every election and Massachusetts with it’s 7.8% blacks or Vermont with it’s 1.1% black population, never does.

With the black vote there never was a period of slow change, or transformation, or growth, or whatever normally applies, one day blacks as a mass group were a permanent part of the republican party, and then one day they permanently switched over to the democrat party.

America’s only “El Presidente for Life”, he finally died in office.

The world was awash with powerful fascistic and communistic and socialistic strong men, and America was not untouched by that.

So, since the south was predominately Democrat during that period..then why would the make it so hard for them to vote? (I’m not contending what you’re saying in fact I’ve learned something today.)

That stinks, but they can never take away being on top while you were. Most people never get to say anything like that.

If the people have a right to all those fruits, who’s labor are you planning to steal?

muawiyah I don’t understand you, I doubt that anyone does, you wanted to tell us that blacks make up “40% of the Democrat vote overall”, and that “Blacks are today THE DEMOCRAT PARTY itself.”

I don’t know what you are talking about, and pointed out some examples like California and Massachusetts and Vermont and Mississippi, that indicate that blacks do not make up the national democrat party.

You err gravely. One day hardly any blacks were allowed to vote. The next day 2/3 of the ones allowed to vote, mostly in the North, voted for FDR. By the time JFK came along 75% of them voted for him. Then, when LBJ came along he got about 98% ~ maybe 100% if all of them had been counted.

Vast numbers of blacks began to vote AFTER the civil rights act of 1965 was passed ~ and they did so at about a 92% to 98% rate ~ right up to the present.

The number of black voters has grown as have the percentage of black voters voting.

The Republican key advantage is that we are not regionally isolated like the Democrats, nor are we totally dependent on the black vote in large Eastern cities!. The black voters, in effect, provide 40% of the normal Democrat vote in the states and cities where the Democrats dominant.

Get this straight for once ~ 40% of the Democrat vote is NOT 40% of the total vote!

Your normal electorate tends toward a 50/50 split ~ with an additional possibility of another large block of the currently non voting electorate deciding to turn out over some issue. What that means is if the Democrats get 50% of the vote, they still did not get 50% of all adults to vote for them who could have voted. They get about 35% of total available voters. Republicans also do that on average. Another 30% just don't vote.

The blacks, by turning out in very large percentages for Presidential year elections, easily control the Democrat party's fortunes.

Black voters are not evenly scattered across the nation. They are concentrated. They are further concentrated in the same places where Democrats are concentrated. You want to run for the state legislature in a Democrat party dominated state as a Democrat, you are going to have to pass muster with the black political elite inside that party.

I guess you mean blacks, it would be local politics, in 1930, Mississippi was more than 50% black.

Black voters could have run everything from Governor to dog catcher from shear force of numbers.

you don't understand because you do not understand simple mathematics.

A minority of 13.9% nationwide, when concentrated in half the nation is actually a minority of 27.2% in that half. If they are actually concentrated in 1/3 of the nation, they become 3X 13.9% or 41.7% ~ or roughly so since their percentage varies from state to state.

If a competing interest group, e.g. Republicans, can account for 49% of the total normal vote in those areas where Democrats dominant, that is, the Democrats get 51%, all at once anyone can see that on the average that 41.7% of the Democrat vote can easily sway 100% of the Democrat vote through the normal process of political affiliation and horsetrading.

People don’t understand you because you speak in gibberish.

“”You err gravely. One day hardly any blacks were allowed to vote. The next day 2/3 of the ones allowed to vote, mostly in the North, voted for FDR.””

So in 1932 about 71% of blacks voted against FDR and then in 1936, about 71% voted for FDR, and that was because they were suddenly allowed to vote, so Northern blacks accounted for most of that switch?

“”Get this straight for once ~ 40% of the Democrat vote is NOT 40% of the total vote!””

What does that have to do with my posts? I just quoted you and your claim. “40% of the Democrat vote overall”, and that “Blacks are today THE DEMOCRAT PARTY itself.”

Mississippi is the blackest state in America and goes republican every year and is a red state.

I would say that pure democrat states like California, Massachusetts, Vermont and Hawaii do just fine without many blacks, just as red states with very large black populations do pretty well with GOP politics.

Nationally, the 13% of the electorate that is black, does not run the democrat party.
