The sudden shortage of ammo available just isnt making sense. Yes, DHS has made substantial purchases (~1.6b rounds) but when one looks at the numbers, this alone cannot account for such dramatic shortages of supply.
Just estimating, for purpose of an example, 1.6b rounds is a huge purchase but how does this break out?
1.6b divided by 50 rounds/box equals 32m boxes. There are 50 states and for purposes of simplifying this example, say there are 50 cities in each state and 5 stores (outlets) per city. This computes to 125,000 total outlets in the US.
If one divides 32m boxes by 125,000 outlets, this equals 256 boxes (drain) on each outlet. There are certainly more than 50 cities in each state and highly likely that there are more than 5 outlets within each city.
My point, how could this action by DHS be the sole driver behind the shortages we are facing? There has to be more to this issue.
You can find most any odd hunting rifle caliber centerfire at my Walmart and the other two near here.
There weren’t any disruptions I saw before early December.
I have some ammo (45ACP) made by Western Case Cartridge company in 1942. Had 600 rounds of it and have gone through half in the last year. Not one misfire, corroded primer/round...no problem. Only problem is that old WWII ammo is corrosive. You need to clean and oil the gun right afterwards if you don’t want a bunch of rust.
I’ll take your word for it, but I swear I saw numbers approaching 800,000 rounds or more.
They blather about how powerful the US is and how our Democracy , blah blah blah. In truth, our oppressors are implementing democracy (small D), and as long as they keep their EBTs, there is no problem. Best thing to do is to locate out of their likely pathways - bus/rail routes, interstates, etc. Days away from them.
They are horribly wrong...horribly. You people didn't think all these programs about Walkers and Zombies were about dead people did you?
Correction: Rightfully afraid of their government.
This is true. I resolve to buy until it hurts, and then some. (When I can find it)
Really? So, you haven’t noticed the skyrocketing metal prices the last few years? The mineral shortages? This has been building up for a while now.
Of course there is normal inflation, but just yesterday, I bought three boxes of Tula 223 55 grain ball ammo for $5.37 a box. I have some old Federal and some old American Eagle (I think) from 20 years ago that wasn’t much cheaper than that. Granted the Tula is painted/lacuered steel case, the slugs are FMJ ball.
Sunday, three weeks ago on an early Sunday morning I hit on my Walmart and got a 420 round ammo can (new 30 carbine can) of XM855LC1 Federal Lake City plant ammo - SS109 penetrators for $175......) honest dealers are still selling ammo at Pre-Newtown prices - not like some online retailers I won’t name.
Well, Hell’s bells, Georgia Girl 2, I’ll take that PMR 30 off your hands for a tidy cash profit if you wanna sell it.
Supply and demand. There is a great demand right now because of all the gun grabbing rhetoric. New owners, old owners, preppers, plinkers they all want ammo right now.
If I was a dealer, I’d raise prices to benefit from the current panic. In a heartbeat.
And capitalism dictates that I think. But loyalty, customer loyalty can be easily swayed. For one, I will consider any purchase I make from Cheaperthandirt.com more carefully in the future. They are raising prices drastically (4-5 times) on some high-demand ammo.
Correction accepted.

You and every other guy in town. LOL!!! I just got offered $1,000 for it the other week. I waited on back order 2 years for that little puppy. Just got it in Jan. My fiancee’ has to bodyguard me in and out of the gun range. It is really a hot little gun. Louder than a you know what though. It takes a lttle getting used to. Love the 30 round mag.
>>Calling doesnt work any more.
We live in the south. The guy at the gun counter at Academy and the ammo counter at Wal-Mart are allies. Now, if you call and get one of Holder’s People, you might as well not ask.
70 million new guns since Obama took office, times a thousand rounds, is by itself 70 billion rounds.
I was born here...Family goes back before the Civil War. I know “connected”...good ole boy and the like....you know’em you got an ‘in’....I see it all the time. It’s why I have to be there at 7:00 AM at Walmart everyday to get ‘my’ turn.
I saw a WM employee at 6:55 AM hit up the sporting goods guy for three boxes of 525 round 22LR he had under the counter...you can’t fight connections. If you have them, that’s fine. If you don’t, you have to try harder I guess.
Just basic practice is going to be in 200 to 300 rounds a month... that’s going to add up to 3000 to 5000 a year, for the few that actually practice.
...for the few that actually practice.
Good admonition. Sure, I've been to the range recently, but I haven't been to a tactical range in a couple of years.
My bad.
