There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?
I guess it depends on what you call a musician. Willie can’t sing worth a crap but he’s a great songwriter!
He's also fairly accomplished at playing the "catgut" guitar. (A.K.A Classical Guitar)
Yep, he put his finger right on it.
Frankly what is far more overrated than the musicians on this thread is what most freepers think these days
Very little independent thinking around here anymore
Usually just a lemming like refrain for what is perceived to be a popular relatively non threatening view
The moderates are back in full force clamouring for zots on anyone accused of bigotry racism or anti semitism
Why on earth did they not stay gone anti freeping over Giuliani
Now back acting like they never were really pro amnesty after all
Who let them back in?
We’ve never been the same since the 9-11 influx really
BTW...anyone think Zeppelin..Beatles.....Stones ....Tull ( early to mid) or Neil Young or AC DC are overrated is either a resentful Gen Z or stupid or both
And too young to know history here anyhow
Grateful Dead.
Yea
And that Camarillo Brillo nut
Way overrated
/s
I call his his style all delivery, no voice.
You’re absolutely right about that, and if you judge him as a musician, he’s subpar. Still, I think he was a good entertainer, and sometimes that is all you need.
Willie is also a great song *chooser*:

Both with his tastefully understated nylon string playing.
Darren
With all due respect son
LZ was simply an eventuality of Yardbirds same as Beck or Clapton’s endeavors
Page had to play somewhere after them and wanted a harder blues sound
Pie evolved from Small Faces and actually started slightly later than LZ
Neither came from the other...Pie was fun and rollicking.....Cactus like
LZ ....well....they really have no peers in my view in the trippy medieval blues rock.....originators
But if we want to credit Brit rock firsts?
Stones...Beatles....Who....Kinks came first
Yardbirds and Blues breakers spawned a whole lot
Savoy Brown
I liked Humble Pie....saw them in 72 I think
But LZ from first to Houses is like the Torah of rock history
Same level as Stones circa 68-72
With all due respect
Quite right
I get so sick of the stole it from black man argument
And just where did black man in the South get his guitar from?
Why evil whitey of course
A diddly bow ain’t no guitar race baiters so don’t even try
Music is always uploaded from somewhere to somebody first
And then expanded
Did Hendrix steal from the black man too?
BTW....Rosedale Rolling Fork and Leland are in my DNA.....I am from that region....
Proud of it...

Heh.
I like Zeppelin, but they are a glorified cover band. Pretty much every song on their first four albums is a cover, and most of them unattributed.
Yeah, but come on.
They’re a cover band about to the extent that Apocalypse Now is a cover of Heart of Darkness.
That’s what I thought about Seger when I only knew his adult comtemporary friendly radio stuff, and a couple of the big hit rock songs he did. He recorded some really good stuff though, that isn’t necessarily what he is widely known for.
I think it’s all a result of him trying for so long to get an audience outside of Detroit. Once he found success with the down tempo ballads, he mostly stuck with that, even though his hard rockers are arguably superior music.
Check out his cover of “River Deep Mountain High” from 1970, and tell me if your mom would jazzercise to this:

My favorite was the “songs you are embarassed to admit you like” thread. That was fun.
I agree, Dire Straits are more underrated than overrated.
“Chuck Berry”
You’ve got to be joking.
Howlin’ Wolf could sing... you can tell from parts of “Moanin’ at Midnight”. He just usually chose not to :)
"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing."
Dude, the Eagles had like, one of the best tunes with Hotel California. It’s a classic. But then they also sang Dust in the wind right? Depressing as hell but ah the pitch and harmony. What else did they turn out? I’m drawing a blank.
