Got this for $350 when taxes are included. Has Windows 8. I have not opened the box yet and will wait until Sunday to see if there isn't some thing better out there at Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot etc...
So what do freepers think of this model? The CPU comes in at above 2100 on CPU benchmark site and I will be adding 4gb memory soon to make 8gb. This cpu is Ivy Bridge which is the latest
Seems quite good for the price.

I assume the Windows 8 is the 64bit version (better be!) and if so, the Maximum Memory is 16GB Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Slots: 2.
See my Windows 8 pro review on FR here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2983661/posts Get Classic Shell if you do not like the playground type desktop.
HD is 5400rpm, the norm for laptops, versus the standard 7200 for desktops.
Here is a lot of the bloat you can do likely do without:
1 month trial for new Microsoft® Office 365 customers, Hard disc (HDD) recovery, Norton Anti-Theft (30-day Trial), Norton Internet Suite (30-day trial), Norton PC Checkup, Norton Online Backup (30-day Trial), TOSHIBA App Place, TOSHIBA BookPlace, , WildTangent® Orb Games Console
My last 3 laptops that weren’t for work were Toshibas. I’ve been happy with them other than a couple of quality issues regarding the case coming apart near the monitor and the monitor becoming lose to where it won’t stay at a certain angle (doesn’t move much but enough to be annoying). Of course, if you leave it on a desk most of the time you probably won’t have that problem. The other caveat is that the problems described above I had with two of them were after they were a couple of years old so it can be attributed to wear and tear.
That’s not the correct model. You looked at a faster i3 processor and not the 2020m which is pokey.
Come to think about it, I had to replace an AC Adaptor too for that reason. The after-market one is a universal with a 90 degree angle so it doesn’t have the wire bend when coming up behind it.
The MS Office that you have is 60 day trial version that comes with advertisements and 500gb is more than enough for most people. The only way to fill up 500gb is with lots of DVDs ripped onto the hard drive at 4.3gb per movie. Though Blue Ray movies take up 23gb which I never put on my hard drive. Someone who makes lots of home movies can fill up 500gb.
Word on Office 2000 works good enuff on 64bit (such as Windows 7) systems and can be found on torrent sites
Visually Windows 7 is the way to go...over Windows 8
You are sppsd to place the cursor in the top or bottom right corner of the screen, and hit the gear “settings” icon (or hold Windows key and tap the i key) , and then hit Power.
I us the old and safe Slawdog shutdown: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/smartshutdown.html, which will run in the system try, and then just right click on it for menu.
Or (if not on your desktop) hold Windows key and tap the d key and let go, then hold the Alt key and F4 and let go.
Sorry. There are lot of 855 models: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=Toshiba+Satellite+C855&rh=n%3A541966%2Ck%3AToshiba+Satellite+C855
Oh, I paid good coin for the Office 2013 with Word and also for Acrobat. This baby is loaded. Can’t figure out a lot of stuff yet, I was used to my faithful old XP. It just got too full, and MS wasn’t supporting XP much anymore, trying to push us onto newer products. The last few months, every time you would turn it off, it would have to install a few updates for about ten minutes each time.
I assume the Windows 8 is the 64bit version (better be!)>>>>>>>>>
Darn right it better be! It can handle 16GB. Of the two memory slots only one slot is occupied by a 4gb module. So they say. So I need only add a 4gb or 8gb module for a very nice upgrade
OK you got the real Office not the trial. You made the right move to get a new computer because all the web browsers (like FireFox) and simple applications like Picassa get more bloated all the time and need more horsepower and memory to operate. So you kinda have to buy a new computer unless you want to struggle and keep Firefox at version 5.3
For some reason my Toshiba Satellite won’t play DVD’s without stopping and starting. Very annoying when trying to watch movies. It’s like trying to watch a movie on the internet with the constant buffering.
I prefer Win 7. 8 sucks. They put 8 on the servers. Total suck.
I’ve programmed whole applications with Notepad as my editor. No frills, but it works and you can have 50 instances of the thing open to edit different files, and it won’t kill your performance running other programs.
The 2020m cpu can use up to 32 Gb, not 16.
Mine boots faster than it did under XP, but the HD on mine also runs much more then i would like, usually only when coming out of sleep mode, and it seems to have to do with memory allocation as i use up almost all my available 3,38gb or ram, plus 4gb Flash drive ReadyBoost.
I would recommended you right click on the C drive and hit Properties, and under General deselect "Allow files on this drive to be indexed."
More info is needed to help. You could try a simple diagnostic app like What's My Computer Doing? (http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=148942&t=4&i=1) and see what is running when you see HD activity. .
Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) will show more (choose I/O writes) but it is not as easy.
A must to have is WinPatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html (choose Free version). It will alert you to clandestine changes to the system and also has options to see and change what starts with your PC. (Let click twice on icon in system tray)
You almost certainly need to have matching ram chips.
Also I would not assume the OS to be anything other than 32 bit. The cpu might be 64 bit, but the OS is what determines memory handling.
I would trade it in and pick up a MacBook Pro (15 inch). It is more expensive than the Toshiba and you can use it at the local Starbucks without getting stared at.
