Loud noise heard in Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon has residents puzzled
Social media was abuzz this weekend following what is begin described as a loud boom that was heard all over Southern Illinois Saturday.
The source of the noise is unknown and, according to some, has been recurring for the past several weeks.
Loud and mysterious booms are being heard and felt around the region. For more than a month, the noise has been compared to a sonic boom, tannerite, shotgun, dynamite or cannon. The theories surrounding the source of the loud bangs range from fracking to supersonic jets, meteors and even the end-times. However, an official explanation has not been given, leaving residents baffled. Wanting answers, many have turned to their local media.
The first time I heard it, I waited to hear sirens. I dismissed it assuming I would find out what happened later on the news, said Lori Wharton Libby. An accident was not to blame for the noise that day nor was anything on the news regarding what she heard.
Many have experienced it frequently over the past several weeks.
We tried to put the facts together, said Libby. We knew it wasnt a gun or cannon. The noise is loud enough to scare our dog under the bed. People from as far east as Harrisburg and north of Mt. Vernon have heard and felt the same noise that I described.
The West Frankfort Police Department said that they have not received any complaints regarding the issue.
Further investigation finds these unidentified noises are taking place all over the country. Around the beginning of January people from Utah, Massachusetts, Alaska, Tennessee, Indiana and Florida have been contacting their local authorities and news media outlets regarding unexplained loud booms.

“Where’s the Ka-Boom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering Ka-Boom.”
Obama brain fart . . . did he fly overhead recently?
I’ve heard a few of them recently in my area too.
Maybe the New Madrid fault is getting ready for some activity.
A double “boom” will be caused by something supersonic - e.g., a meteor or a high performance fighter. As an old flight test type, we still do supersonic flights over designated areas in the country during acceptance and repair testing. Perhaps not normal wx patterns (temp distributions/etc) in the area allowed the sounds to travel further than normal...be amplified....etc.
If it’s a single boom, it’s created by something else...perhaps portions of the universe collapsing due to liberal imbecility.
Story is a retread from earthfiles.com, Linda Moulton Howe’s website. She’s a regular contributor to Coast to Coast AM radio. UFO sightings, Shadow people, secret underground NAZI UFO bases, etc.
Military Jets. Get them all the time here, along with fly bys from warthogs. Just had 2 f117’s come by an hour ago.
It’s due....
I’ve been in a few earthquakes, but the only one that was accompanied by a ‘loud boom/crack’ was the one in Red Hampshire months ago...that was why my initial reaction was ‘explosion’...
yep ... would say that is accurate.
Roofgoat,
F117s are retired (except for a few at Nellis). Are you sure that’s what you saw 2 of today?

Same thing happened in Clintonville, Wisconsin. Was “solved” as mini earthquakes.
Exactly my thought as well. I’m in the 3rd ring out from ground zero when that thing lets loose.
So the tunneling is under Missou andsouthern Illinois now. Soon it will be completed coast to coast, well, at least coast to Denver and New Mexico and Utrah where the underground bunkers are being stocked.
