We have some Indians here, who own some mini-marts (quik-stops, speedy shops, etc.) and the owner told me not too long ago that in India, if something costs less than five rupees, or your change is less than five rupees, you will be given candy instead of money. By the same token, if you buy something and the final amount is less than five rupees, you can pay for it in candy.
Needless to say, I was pretty amazed by that. I hope America never gives up the penny, if for nothing else than the fact that it is a symbol.
