At the time we were NOT Israel’s friend. We had embargoed the Israelis for any weapon purchases. The Suez Crisis actually had the US and USSR pitted against the Israelis, French and Brits in negotiations over the Suez canal.

Both statements are untrue. The US and Israel had friendly relations before the 67 war. And there was no US arms embargo against Israel then. Prior to 1967, we sold them lots of weapons as we also sold weapons to Egypt In both cases, it was primarily "defensive" type weaponry.

The US was not the primary supplier to either however. Most advanced offensive Israeli weapons came from France and the UK, and most advanced Egyptian weapons were from the Soviets and East Block countries.

The Israelis relied on French Mirage war planes and British Centurion tanks while the Egyptians and Syrians had Mig fighters and Russian T-54 tanks.
