OK... I LOOKED, SEARCHED.... didn't find anything from Dotty. But, seriously... tonight's the OSCARS! Where's our Live Thread??
Speak your mind, woman. You brought up the film. :) This is, after all, a political forum. (Not a Hollywood dress rehearsal - we speak now about real things)
Now THAT would win Best Picture hands down.....that was Spielberg's mistake.
Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, but he also was the worst abuser of the US Constitution.
Tie between him, Wilson, and FDR.
You and I could have very interesting conversations. I have great disdain for both Wilson and FDR, and that other Roosevelt as well. But don’t let me get to LBJ, Carter, or Obama.
“I have seen every Autry flick growing up or as an adult.”
There’s always John Wayne. ;)
“Looking back on it now, it was all about giving parents some time away from the kids.”
One can assume so. Not that you would let your kids run off to a matinee now anyway since today’s wisdom holds that they’re going to have an unplanned date with a guy in a van labeled “Free Candy”.
“I am sure my parents ran back home to the bedroom.”
And then, a few weeks after you saw Stardust on the Sage, your parents announced that you had a new brother or sister coming.
Fellow told me that we have had six fascist presidents, which were Lincoln, Wilson, FDR, Nixon, Clinton, and Obama.
Ang Lee for Best Director? I didn't expect that...I am glad that Adele won the award for SKYFALL...
There were some piss poor John Wayne movies as well. (Note: early John Wayne movies are difficult to watch as an adult. Back then, with a theatre full of screaming kids it was fun.)
I'd vote to hang her...
I don't watch her in anything.
I second that, SomeCallMeTim.
Let us not pretend most of those 30s-40s-50s Westerns were exactly the zenith of filmmaking achievement. Gene Autry made a total of 93 movies over two decades, an average of five per year and yeah, they were pretty much all exactly the same. Singing cowboy teams up with Smiley Burnett and a pretty girl to save the world from outlaws/corrupt sheriffs/greedy oil and mining companies. Not that it mattered to his main target audience (ie. 10 yo males).
I mean, people like to romanticize that era as the golden age of Hollywood, but the Gone With The Winds and the Citizen Kanes were far more the exception than the norm and they didn’t even make that much box office money at the time.
LOL!
Glad your local girl won the Oscar. I didn't see "Silver Linings Playbook"... will have to catch it sometime.
It’s happened before. Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn tied for best actress in l969.
Interesting... I didn't know that. Thanks!
No, Nixon was not a fascist. Crook probably; but so were others. Actually Nixon knew how to handle the leaders of foreign countries. He got a far worse wrap than others because he was a Republican and we can’t have that; only Democrats allowed to get away with anything which is why we are in the position we are in today.
We're glad, too, Bender! Good to see you here... :-)
GWTW was the highest grosser of all time.
I hear you and as usual the story was not really Lincoln. The Civil war was never fought over slavery per se. It was fought over economics which is what many wars are fought over. Argo I hear didn’t exactly follow the truth I hear too. Wilson was a pretty good abuser of the Constitution as well.
I'll not elaborate on that statement...
Fair list, yet you missed how ‘green’ the coen brothers are and how vocal they have become.
Here I am (it is Dolly === not Dotty LOL)
I have found over the years the abuse in posting these threads is more painful than it is worth`. Thanks for the tread & I will read the comments as soon as I post
I loved the awards until MO’s presence
Great year for cinema.. my avocation/interest/love since childhood
Django was an excellent film. A bit too much blood & guts to suit me but good. Again the super conservative element took a statement out of context to make the star appear something other than reality. that is why I no longer do film posts here.. Hop on a bandwagon and damn the facts/truth.
