Butter vs. Margarine: New Research Reveals Which is Healthier
newsmax ^ | 2/15/2013 | Sylvia Booth Hubbard

Margarine isn't better for your heart than butter — it's worse, according to a new analysis of a 40-year-old study. For 50 years, health experts and organizations, including the American Heart Association, have urged people to replace butter and other saturated fats in their diets with vegetable oils to reduce the risk of heart disease. Millions of Americans responded by replacing butter with margarine made from omega-6 polyunsaturated vegetable oils found in corn and safflower oil.

Decades later, however, heart disease is still the leading cause of death in both American men and women, and a recent analysis of data collected from 1966 to 1973 indicates that replacing butter and other saturated fats with vegetable oils may have increased the risk of heart disease instead of reducing it.

Sorry Catherine, but Bob is actually right. Google the “hygiene hypothesis”.

And it gets worse. Seems that some of the parasites we rid ourselves of were actually a part of our immune system.

“helminth therapy”

And it gets even WORSE.

“fecal transplant”

If Bob is as healthy as he says he is, he’s EXACTLY the person you’d want to prepare your meals. He’d pass on a healthy balance of bacteria.

Being too sterile has killed the Western immune system. We’ve had germs and parasites (symbiotes) as part of our systems for time immemorial. We were designed to deal with that to the point where their absence makes us sick.

When my kids were little, they were ‘allergy babies’. Allergic to everything. But then they’d go spend a month or two on grandma’s farm. They’d play in the hay, run barefoot through the barnyard with bird crap and worse, splash in the algae-infested, muddy creek...

And they would be healthy. After a month back at home with Lysol, bleach and Purel, they’d be back on the inhalers and coming down with strep, bronchitis and skin infections.

And with that all said, I just bleached my counters and used hand sanitizer. I still can’t get past the ‘ick’ factor. But I am MUCH more relaxed than I was before. I do think there’s a happy medium.

In Wisconsin where I grew up, margarine was banned for many years. People had to drive down to Iowa to buy it where it was cheaper. I remember they even had a little coloring cube which my mother used to mix in with the margarine to give a butter color. I’ve always hated the taste of margarine.

Butter in our house as a child. Butter in my house now. Recently we use unsalted butter. The taste is more delicate. Go Butter!! And not the south park kid :-)

Oh, I don’t doubt you a bit.

I learned how to garden shortly after discovering that the port-a-johns in the Tennessee tomato fields had no facilities for washing your hands...home-grown DOES taste better! :-)

Thanks for the info! I've never heard of using Duck Oil before, but it sounds promising. I have a lot of new info to digest here!

my lovely wife makes me buy salted butter because of the taste of salt. She has no problem with blood pressure.

Another myth. Salt doesn't raise blood pressure.

Margarine is (or at least) can be MUCH EASIER to spread on bread than butter

Who eats bread?

My Mother (RIP 5/2/11) was a big proponent of margarine in the 50s & 60s, but we kids wouldn’t eat it on anything. After 40yrs, both her neck carotid arteries clotted-up and she suffered 6 very minor TIAs, and they had to be surgically bypassed. We tried for years to wean her off that garbage, but she loved it, and I blame it partially for killing her.

We’ve recently replaced butter in baking recipes with coconut oil

The nice thing about coconut oil is it doesn't alter the flavor of the food.

I don’t know. I remember last fall. It’s weird to me. All this technology, all this fast food, all this (crap). JR and the mods know how incendiary I am.

I live a simple life. I don’t really relate to Conservatism, or Republican-ism. I won’t even begin to describe the other side. I just want to live my life free (the way it was in my memories). And to pass that along.

It’ll change the way you cook. Watch the sparkle in your guests’ eyes. Clarified Duck Fat is quite amazing, and prof chefs prefer it to EVOO and better.
