Robert De Niro breaks down in tears as he discusses the plight of his bipolar illness

Robert De Niro wasn't acting when he broke down in sobs on Katie Couric's day time talk show Monday.

The usually tough-guy actor was a guest on Katie to discuss the hit film Silver Linings Playbook with director David O. Russell and co-star Bradley Cooper.

When asked about the film's premise - that of a bipolar character trying in vain to fit in - The Goodfellas actor began to cry.

'Did you feel a greater responsibility about doing a film that David had so much personally invested in?' the anchor asked, following up on a question asked of Russell.

'Of course, I uhm – I understand,' replied De Niro, who plays the father of Bradley Cooper's troubled Pat. After a long pause, he tried to continue, but sobbed up.

'I don’t like to get emotional, but I know exactly what he goes through.'

Russell was inspired to write the film because his son suffers from bipolar disorder as well as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Those are the mental illnesses that plague Cooper’s character Pat.

'There’s nothing harder in life than when you can’t, can’t figure out what to do,' Russell said about dealing with a character like Pat. 'You try everything, and you must never stop. Your heart just has to keep growing.'

I found no headline or article supporting that Deniro has Bipolar Disorder. Does he?

It looks like the headline got changed somewhere along the way. As I read the article, De Niro understands what David O. Wallace goes through with his bipolar son, either because he saw them interact, or because he goes through something similar with his own kids. By that interpretation, De Niro has a child who's either bipolar or troubled in some other way.

Of course he could be bipolar himself, but if he plays the parent of a bipolar child in the movie and is talking about how real-life experience made it easier or richer or satisfying for him to play the role, he wouldn't be talking about having the condition himself.

Oh my gosh. Bless you. My wife and I completed that course around Thanksgiving. It was truly a life changing experience in so many ways.

That's great! Our son was originally diagnosed with BP back in 2006, at which time we got involved with NAMI and took the F2F 12-week course. Frankly it was a life saver for us. I doubt our son would be doing as we'll as he is now had we not taken that course. My wife and I have been instructors for F2F for about 6 years now and in fact we're starting another 12-week class this week (22 people signed up). The last class I taught was at the VA hospital with family members of ill Vets.

Bipolar: Hollywood Lib, violent movies, big bucks, feel guilty, blow smoke up Clinton’s skirt.

Whether or not this clown has a diagnosis is beside the point.

Bipolar, Mentall Illness, whatever, It’s the new cool.

If Bipolar is cool enough for BD, then it’s cool enough for Everybody, and Goodbye 2nd Amendment.

Robert De Niro and Robin Williams were “self-medicating” the night their friend John Belushi ODed.

Some think that Hollywood’s recent bipolar ODs and human disaster stories that play out in the gossip press are something new. And Hollywood gossip queens at TMZ love to see them fall. Sort of prevents some of them from seeking the help they need.

Everytime one of these nitwits shows up describing their perfect kid and perfect parenting methods I want to come right thru the computer screen at em.

Just seen something similar to this in doing my own sleep improvement study, it talks about bipolar and light. As for me, I got the blue blocker glasses off Amazon.com and put them on when watching TV at night, seems to me to help, I’ll add a couple of more links for anyone else interested;

Mental Health Benefits of Amber Colored Lenses
http://www.zimbio.com/Real+Depression+Help/articles/PakrrJ5cuNW/Mental+Health+Benefits+Amber+Colored+Lenses

Preliminary research has shown that amber colored lenses, which block blue light, can help regulate the mood of those suffering from bipolar disorder, insomnia, sleep deprivation as well as other maladies. Jim Phelps, M.D., from Corvallis, Oregon, is a pioneer in the field and has written extensively on the subject.

In an abstract from his study titled “Dark Therapy for Bipolar Disorder Using Amber Lenses for Blue Light Blockade”, Dr. Phelps writes that “Dark Therapy”, a treatment that uses total darkness to stabilize mood in those with bipolar disorder, is supported in several studies. This is basically the opposite of light therapy for depression.

(me again) I’ve been working on sleeping better, there’s some great tips to help, and let me say I feel great since I started on this, just keep it open in a tab and read as necessary;

How to Sleep Better
http://helpguide.org/life/sleep_tips.htm

How Light Affects Our Sleep
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-light-affects-our-sleep/#axzz2HLgq9Zv8

marksdailyapple.com has some other articles too, just haven’t read them yet, but it also recommends a free computer program to “to cut down on blue light emissions”, basically it turns a light shade of orange at night, here's another link for that;

Better lighting...for your computer

No, not everyone is mentally ill- but almost everyone is sick.

We are poisoned with one or more of the following: Indoctrination in the schools, environmental chemicals, vaccines, GMOs and/or media brainwashing- in TV, movies, print.

It is highly frustrating to live in this country. People react to adrenaline, hormones, chemicals... with physical and emotional illness. Mental illness do happen as well.

Our society is sick everywhere we look. But no, not everyone is bipolar.

I’m not a Doctor and thus can’t answer that, and besides, every individual is different with respect to what works and what doesn’t. I know that some medications work for some people and not for others. Generally, doctors will prescribe what has the least side-effects first (first line medications) and only move to second or third line Meds (with harsher side effects) if necessary. In the 12week class I teach, we have a module on medications. If there is a NAMI affiliate in your area, I’d highly recommend you call and ask if the Family-to-Family course is available in your area. It made a huge difference for us.
