A dog fight ended with a hail of bullets in a Philadelphia suburb, leaving residents shocked and looking for answers.

The incident started on Friday at around noon when a stray dog got into a pickup truck at a red light in Chester, Pa., and began fighting with another pooch, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.

Sorry, we were w/out power last night.

I would have walked away, cleared the area, until animal control came....that’s *supposing* I was a cop. I would have made an attempt to find the truck owner, by tracing the tag number.

We’ll never know what happened as this event *under investigation.*

I don't understand shooting the dogs. Maybe one but not both. Is this how they handle a fight and deal out justice???

What danger were they to human life??? And they shot them in the vehicle??? They couldn't determine that one of those dogs had the right to be in the vehicle and was just defending himself from the aggressor??? and the aggressor was [duh] a pit bull. Shoot the one and the fight is over.

All those badges there and they couldn't figure that out. These are morons wearing a badge -- and they have guns???

The report doesn’t say if the dogs were in the truck bed....but it sounds as if they were contained in the cab; the video doesn’t show dogs running around. By blowing out the window of the truck, a dog could escape and then be a danger to the public....not to mention the ricocheting bullets off metal truck.

So that’s where cadet Tackleberry ended up.

Cmndt. Eric Lassard: What is the most frustrating thing about police work?
Tackleberry: Not being able to carry hand grenades, sir.

Where I work we have a problem with pit bulls. Thugs get them, breed them, fight them, train them to be aggressive and then, when they don’t want them anymore they simply let them run wild. I once saw a guy walking his pit bull down the street and he had tied a cinder block around it’s neck.

You get the picture.

I’ve seen these same pit bulls rip people’s flesh to shreds. Kids faces so torn up they had to be life flighted to major hospitals.

I’ve also seen some of our “dog whisperer” police officers get bit. A rottweiler bit one of our guys on the forearm and broke his arm. A rookie that I recently trained tried to latch on to a loose pit bull and it bit him in the thigh.

I’ve seen charging pit bulls get shot in the head with .45’s back off and charge again. I shot a pit bull with 00 buck directly in the side. It rolled over and got back up and came at me again. This was after it had killed another dog.

I also work in a city that laid off the dog catcher claiming they didn’t have the money to pay him while they gave the mayor and is cronies raises.

So, no dog catcher, guess who the city sends to catch the dogs? AND because of union restraints, they wouldn’t even let us use the dog catchers equipment.

While I’m ranting, pepper spray doesn’t always work. Not on humans and not on dogs. I once had to run from 2 rottweilers owned by a drug dealer. I pulled the pepper spray and got both of them in the face. Lucky for me I was also able to pull a door shut behind me because it didn’t slow them down in the least. Pepper spray is just about worthless. In fact, when you spray it you get the effects just as bad as the target your spraying. I don’t even carry it anymore. Junk.

I don’t know how many times I’ve showed up at people’s houses (who have called the police) and don’t want to put their dogs away. “Oh, he doesn’t bite.” Sure. Next thing ya know the dog is on you like a bad rash. A few times I’ve had scratches from teeth that didn’t break the skin. The bottom of my shoe has been latched onto on more than one occasion as well.

Recently I had to shoot a deer that got hit by a car. I waited until no traffic was coming because I didn’t want anybody to be subject to seeing it, knowing the sensitivities.

I used a 12 gauge slug and hit the deer square. I figured that would end it quick, it usually does. The deer jumped straight up and looked like it might jump into the road so I hit it again with buckshot. Well, some woman, in a car that I didn’t even see, saw me shoot the deer the second time. She called and made a complaint.

Are there cops who shoot dogs they shouldn’t? Yep. I’m not going to try and defend or deny that. Do a lot of cops get smeared in the paper when they shoot a dog? Yep, I’ve seen that happen. Do people call the police for dog problems? Yes. Do cities put cops in a bad situation by not hiring dog catchers?

Do I get paid enough to get bit by feral pit bulls or other dogs? Not in my mind. If that makes me some kind of a thug or wuss, so be it. My conscience is clear.

And to those who think they can come and do the job better than me, we’re hiring.

Correct. I have 2 Jack Russel male dogs who used to fight occasionally. The only way I could separate them was to drag them outside and fill their mouths and throats up with water from the hose. Too bad the police did not have this option.

Filthy animals? All dogs are just pitt bulls? Tommy guns? Like the ones Dick Tracy uses? :)

...and an overabundance of testosterone....and the inability to *think* under pressure. ;(

Our bucolic town had an incident in a shopping plaza w/ a Home Depot; turns out a woman was shoplifting from the HD. The police chased her to a get-away car and fired wildly into it as she made herself scarce. Some of those stray bullets could have had terrible consequences, me included as I frequent that plaza. For shoplifting. Meh.

Nothing but a light reprimand for the cop...who is back patrolling, making our town *safer.*

The one dog who was in that truck bed in the first place had the right to be there and was just defending himself from the other who jumped in to attack him.

If this is an indication of the way the police there handle home invasions, then residents watch out. The police will just shoot everyone on the scene and then sort it out later.

Correct on all accounts, especially the fact that many places don't have "dog catchers " anymore.
We don't.
So I'm not going to risk myself or someone else getting hurt while I try to diffuse a dog fight in a manner that PETA approves.
I'm not a dog catcher. I'm a police officer.
I'm not even sure that telling people to "walk in our shoes" or "get a job" at the PD is adequate.....I would like them to get a job at their city as the dog catcher or animal control. Then they can save all the dogs they want.

Dogs are dogs. You pull on the back legs of the one on top

Tried this. Doesn't work. Pepper spray on the snout does work. Takes about 20 seconds to work.

So, lets put forth an hypotheses ... how would you have handled it?

Who were the dogs hurting? Each other, so why not let them fight until they got tired of it and stopped. Both dogs would be alive and the cops wouldn't have looked like a bunch of gun happy dildos.

and the aggressor was [duh] a pit bull.

I couldn't find this in the article but I might have just missed it. Would you please post a link that corroborates this claim with a positive ID?

Thanks in advance.

"Freeman told NBCNews.com that the bigger, more aggressive dog seemed to be a pit bull and had a leash, but the other smaller dog didn't."

Oh thanks.

I saw that but was looking for a real ID not a douche bag cop trying to justify killing two dogs by a school for no reason.

Every time a cop shoots a poodle they report that it seemed to be a pit bull so they don't look like cowardly pussies.

Thanks anyway.

“Only works if you mean hosing them down with a Tommy Gun. Filthy animals.”

Well, if I had my choice between my dogs and tyrant king, I would choose my dogs every day and would back it up with necessary force, if you comprende, comrade?
