We went to see The Hobbit yesterday and we thought it was awful. Been surprised that since it's release there haven't been any posts to the Hole.
Are you all disgusted with Part 1?
I didn’t like the storm giants either, but I checked and they are in the book.
I hated the goblintown stuff, but I think the average 12 year old boy would love it.
In the Silmarillion, it is pointed out that the world itself was used in the same way by Melkor/Morgoth, the Vala who was the original Dark Lord. Sauron was just his lieutenant.
Morgoth poured so much of his own self into the world in order to control it that he weakened himself enough that he was defeated and expelled from the world. But the evil he put into the world is now forever part of it.
Saw it with Girl 16, Boy 14, Girl 14, and Boy 9, two sets of unrelated siblings. They all loved it.
The changes in the main characters bothered me the most.
When it stuck to the book, it excelled.
When Jackson decided to rewrite scenes and characters, the enjoyment dropped.
Thorin is *not* so shallow a character as was portrayed in the movie. He has his vices, but he is also honorable (in dwarvish fashion), and noble (again, after the manner of the dwarves).
