I ordered seeds from victoryseeds.com (heirloom) on a weekend and got them in 4 days. Now to see if their seeds germinate as fast as their deliveries.

How awful for you! Are you going into withdrawal? The only thing that would make up for such weather for me would be a roaring fire in the fireplace, a good book, and a bunch of garden catalogs with a cup of hot chocolate or tea.

I also like the idea of feeding it manure and tearing it out by the roots at the end of its usefulness.

Good luck. I’ll join y’all in 2-3 months in planting seeds indoors. Sigh - direct seeding for me is about five months away.

Come on down to Texas and bring some fresh tomatos, and we will fix a mess of collards and cornbread, Southern style! This is ideal collard season, they really get tasty after some frost on their leaves.

Thanks for the kind invite, but I when the frost hits, that’s when I hibernate at home. I don’t go to the store anymore, don’t schedule Dr. Appointments etc etc.

I stay home by the fire, the heater, or if the sun is shining, I bask in the afternoon sun in front of the patio doors where the indoor garden is growing.

I hate cold weather, if I have to get out in it.LOL.

We live on Humboldt Bay in the heart of the Emerald Triangle of northwestern Calif. We use the Sunset Magazine climate zone map due to the variety of zones Calif offers. See my profile if it’s still there...

I’ve used a number of those and they are all good. Some more of my favorites:

RH Shumway:
http://www.rhshumway.com

Fedco Seeds:
http://www.fedcoseeds.com

Landreth Seed:
http://www.landrethseeds.com

Jung:
http://www.jungseed.com

Tomato Growers Supply:
http://www.tomatogrowers.com

Shumway also owns Jung, Vermont, and Totally Tomatoes. Fedco is my absolute favorite. Good prices, great quantities, free shipping over $30. Stuff goes fast, order early! Mine is already in.

Good morning from Texas. It is still very dry here. No rain in Nov and nothing but a trace so far this month.

You only have so much time in your life, why would you live somewhere you cant go outside and enjoy yourself all year long? This has never made sense to me.

They taste like greens—spinach, turnip greens, kale—like those. They’re of the cabbage family, so they have a cabbage flavor, perhaps a little stronger. I cook mine with bacon and add a little vinegar and tabasco. Mmmm....

If you go to a big grocery store, one well stocked with lots of produce, you’ll probably find some there. Try them and see if you like them.

Here’s a nice recipe: Braised Collard Greens

I’ve never read the Garden Thread before, sorta interesting and a refreshing break from reading politics.

Since this is the gardening thread, I’d like to ask a question: Do you own a wood chipper? Do you have a brand name recommendation? We are thinking of buying one.
