It was reported on the news earlier that the school had done a security update earlier this year or last year and that they DID install one of those buzz-in systems.

So now there’s no lock on the school door?

See? The entire story is changing at will.

I *think* the buzz-in would then unlock the door.

No... the meeting room door. Ms. Day is the quoted eyewitness that was in the meeting room with the principal. She said that the principal left the room when the incident started. Since Ms. Day obviously survived the incident, I will speculate that the “teacher”, although wounded in the process, was successful in barricading the meeting room door with her body. (see in quote below). In the first police press conference yesterday, I believe the spokesman said that there was only one person that was wounded and survived. (that may turn out to be the “teacher” described below, or maybe not)

It’s in this article from the Wall Street Journal . . .

“Without a lock to secure the door, a teacher at the meeting pressed her body against the door to hold it shut, Ms. Day said. That teacher was shot through the door in the leg and arm. “She was our hero,” Ms. Day said.

So the son of one of the teachers shows up, says he has an important message for his mom, and he gets buzzed in.

Or a guy shows up, and says his family just moved in, and is here to register his kids, and gets buzzed in...
