A couple of questions:
1) When are Republicans going to stop drinking their own bath water in regards to polling numbers? Twice in a row a significant portion of GOP voters have fell for the "skewed/biased polls" line. Sure there is some gamesmanship in the polls, but to consistently misinterpret them is sad.
2) When are Republicans going to learn they will never win by nominating liberal RINO candidates? Time and time again this happens. People voted against Obama, but almost no one voted for Mitt Romney. Of course what can you expect when you pick a candidate that lost to McCain?
Unfortunately the GOP brain trust is going to misinterpret this again and decide they need to tack further left to cater to the amnesty crowd. This will play directly into the Dems hands. The GOP will not out patronize the amnesty crowd. They shouldn't even try. Unfortunately look for Jeb to be the nominee next time due to his supposed Latino appeal.
I have very little hope for the GOP in the future.
Dole... McCain... Romney...
Unfortunately there is a good deal of evidence that a more conservative candidate would have performed worse.
What you are saying is a variant of the old saw, “We just aren’t presenting our case well.”
I wish conservatives would give some thought to whether the problem is the message, not the messenger.
I happen to agree, in general, with the conservative message. But it’s clear to me that more and more Americans don’t. Doubling down on it may be the right thing to do, but it isn’t likely to win elections.
I don’t think they interpret anything, they just want to move left, period.
They didn’t ‘settle’ on Romney, they wanted Romney, the William Weld republican was the guy that they wanted instead of anyone to his right.
“Unfortunately there is a good deal of evidence that a more conservative candidate would have performed worse.”
Yeah, from the same crowd that was telling us Romney was electable. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.
Right. Romney’s electability problem was not his lack of ideology but rather the fact that he was so ‘elitist.’ He was another Kerry or HW Bush. Remember when GOP-e women cried and begged Christie to run and he turned them down? They knew they’d be stuck with Romney who wasn’t a ‘man of the people.’
“Yeah, from the same crowd that was telling us Romney was electable. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.”
How about the crowd that thought Akin and Mourdock would win?
GW Bush was about as much a RINO as Romney, and he won twice. Reagan was a solid conservative and he won twice. You can’t discount the political skills of the candidate and his strategists.
Was that the same crowd that stopped funding them halfway though? Oh wait, that was Romney and his supporters again.
Remind me how the campaign goal of focussing on winning the presidency and ignoring the lower tier races worked out? Romney actually brought in fewer Senate seats and fewer House seats.
I thought that the whole reason for electing Romney was to help the lower ticket races and ‘lose less badly’. Boy, that worked great.
YET. He still won!!!!!!!!! The sad thing is now we know how the likes of Hitler get in. It is happening right before our eyes. This IS NOT ABOUT THE RIGHT CANNIDATE. Not any more. About 50% of the nation are brainwashed out of their minds.
You cannot reason with insanity and what happened last night was insane.
Granada made the point elsewhere that if conservatism orthodoxy was the panacea why did Alan West loose?
The true issue is an ill educated and subverted electorate. We’ve allowed our children and neighbors to be brainwashed while we looked after ourselves.
Good questions...
First...there needs to be a purging of, not only the GOP leadership and the Liberal RINO elite...there needs to be a purging of the GOP Media (which is just as Liberal RINO). Since the 1992 election (when conservative talk radio started booming nationally), the GOP has won the overall popular vote in the Presidential election ONCE....and only twice have they won the Presidency. Except for Rush Limbaugh...the majority of the “conservative” talk radio crowd are more concerned with getting RINO guests from Fox News for their shows while not supporting the Conservative movement. And, do you really think not discussing Obama Eligibility helped Romney?
Second...its time to realize the GOP is not going to beat the Democrats by being Liberal or “Hispanic”. In fact, if the GOP really wants to win nationally....dump the Free Trade Globalism. Free Trade is the province of Chinese Communists and European Socialists...and US Liberals. You cannot beat the DNC with their own Socialism...and you will not win Midwestern states by taking their jobs away. Obama beat Romney by hammering away on his alleged outsourcing of jobs to foreign countries. Economic theory cannot hide economic fact: Free Trade does not work...economically or politically
Third.....blame really should not be placed on Romney nor Ryan. They ran as good as a campaign as possible. Probably the most stupid comment made these past few hours was “shoulda had Rubio instead of Ryan as VP”. Yeah, right, replacing a good conservative with an Illegal Alien Amnesty Hispanic would have won the Presidency
Its time to do something different. The Liberal RINO nonsense does not work. And, Jeb Bush would be a 57 state disaster as a candidate
Granada made the point elsewhere that if conservatism orthodoxy was the panacea why did Alan West loose?
Allen West lost because Liberal RINO Florida GOP re-districted his seat into a more conservative area
They did the same with my former House Rep Sandy Adams....who ended up losing in a primary to another conservative. The extra Central Florida seat went to ALAN GRAYSON.....thanks Liberal RINO GOP!
Conservatism is never the problem with GOP...it is the lack of Conservatism
It’s really simple.
Turnout.
Despite the population growth - Romney earned substantially fewer votes than John McCain.
Had Romney simply delivered McCain levels of turnout, West would have won.
That should have read “West redistricted into a more LIBERAL district.” My bad. So POd the way the Liberal RINO GOP in this state sabotaged conservatives
“blame really should not be placed on Romney nor Ryan”
Wrong. A leader takes responsibility for the campaign and it’s success or failure. Romney should be held responsible for the failure of his campaign vs Obama.
I have found that reality is always more interesting (and ultimately more satisfying) than fantasy. Maybe it’s just my natural predilection for the natural sciences. Saying that the polls, all of them, are wrong, that the media, all of them, are lying, etc., that’s a fantasy and it will come back to bite you in the end. The pollsters were right, Nate Silver was right, and the next Republican to win the Presidency will have to appeal to voters in Ohio/Florida/Virginia, and those are not deep red states.
“will have to appeal to voters in Ohio/Florida/Virginia, and those are not deep red states.”
We’ve tried that strategy twice, with McCain and Romney. That strategy is finished.
Rather than changing the candidate to suit the electorate why not simply conform the electorate to the candidate?
“Rather than changing the candidate to suit the electorate why not simply conform the electorate to the candidate?”
What exactly did you have in mind? Re-education camps?
Something along the lines of this.
