I do not know the BigGov legalities, but I would use it to light my fireplace. No way they are making me lap their boots like that.

Today I received "The American Community Survey" from the Commerce Dept.

No you didn't. The USPS has been damned unreliable since Sandy blew through! It's not your fault it was lost in the mail.

According to the Census site or the American Community Survey site, yes, you have to answer the questions.

American Community Survey

I'd be creeped out about the questions, though.

I was threatened by the census bureau twice in 2009 that i would be prosecuted if I did not reply. So I called them back and said “none of your business” to every question. They never contacted me again. I made sure it was the census by returning their call.
That lady was SOME pissed off with me!

Tell em to go fry ice.

I thought that was the survey that some people received along with their 2010 census forms. Didn’t know they were circulating this unconstitutional nonsense in non-census years.

"We randomly select about 3.5 million addresses each year to participate in the survey."

Good luck with that.

I think I'd deal with them the same as other polls.

Tell them that you love Bronco Bama.

The Department of Commerce has stated that those who receive a survey form are legally obligated to answer all the questions as accurately as possible. Those who decline to complete the survey may receive follow-up phone calls and/or visits to their homes from Census Bureau personnel. Section 221 of Title 13 U.S.C., makes it a misdemeanor to refuse or willfully neglect to complete the questionnaire or answer questions posed by census takers and imposes a fine of not more than $100. This fine was changed by the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 from $100 to not more than $5,000. The Census Bureau prefers to gain cooperation by convincing respondents of the importance of participation. To date, no person has ever been charged with a crime for refusing to answer the ACS. The Department of Commerce states that it is "not an enforcement agency"

Short answer: don't return it, and if you get a follow up call say you never received it. At that point they may or may not ask follow-up questions. You can be fined if you decline to respond to those questions.

>> Any advice?

I can’t give you any advice.

All I can do is to tell you what *I* would do if it were me.

Ir it were me, I’d shred it.

They keep pestering you until you fill out the form.

You're supposed to fill it out accurately instead of just kinda-sorta-close-enough guesstimates. Of course, they can't tell whether or not you wrote actual correct answers or plausible numbers off the top of your head unless they already know the exact answers, and if they already knew the answers they wouldn't need to send you the form. I'm not suggesting anything, I'm just saying....

I got it too. I threw it out. This week, I got another one. I’m throwing it out as well. There is no way I’m answering any of these questions. They can come to the door and ring ‘til they’re heart’s content. I won’t be here for 3 months. To HELL with these people!

I signed it and sent it back blank. They sent another and I did the same thing.
A woman showed up at my door and said I had to answer the questions.
I answered every question with the response “it’s none of your business” She looked at me, and I told her she wanted an answer, and I gave her one to each question asked. Never heard back. That was 4 months ago. Commerce Dept IIRC.
