Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

If you are running IE, clean your cache (Delete Temporary files) and in the Settings area, make sure it has “Check for new pages on each visit” or something like that. IE is terrible if it is set to “Automatic” which is the default.
Thanks very much, dearest Jim.
Just so you all know: Offers of help have not be spurned. Jim and John are fully aware of the problems and of the solutions, but like Jim has explained, solutions are not instant and they are working as fast as humanly possibly.
I know we’re all exasperated at times and grow impatient, but FR is our home, so please know that while we want an immediate fix, nobody wants it more than Jim and John!
Thank you all for your continued support and patience.
Well, Mr. Robinson, even if it’s your computer that’s at fault, there seems to be a good route from it to mine, because I can post without any trouble. It’s only a little bit slow on debate threads. I’m not smirking, just perplexed. It’s NOT typical in my life to have this kind of luck with machinery! But I thought the fact that this is taking place here in the DC area might help diagnose whatever is going on.
I am confused. If the offers have not been spurned, then they have been accepted? I thought Jim was very clear, several times, that John and John alone was the one and only one who would be working the problem
What changed his mind?
Thanks for that, boss !
LOL! Where in the world do you find spare time? You are are almost always here in the Best Conservative Site on the net that you founded.
That works well for me also.
While the problems have become frustrating, this is still the best conservative news aggregate and forum out there.
A new design looks like it may be inevitable at some point just to keep up with technology.
I just hope that we can save the archives somehow.
“It’s filled with supposed conservatives who will vote for a dyed in the wool liberal no questions asked.”
Not me, but that is beside the point - the site has got to be fixed and I know Jim/John are both trying.
Links to images are no factor at all.
When someone puts a link to an image in their posting, it's to another server -- either the original source, or photobucket/imageshack,etc.
When you view that posting, your browser goes and gets the image from the other server. FR servers aren't involved at all, unless they happen to be serving the image.
I’ve been getting bad gateway pages
I would vote for a dog turd, let alone the city dog catcher over Obama.
HAL is not mocked o-\
I think that the cloud is the way to go, because you can scale up and down your infrastructure as needed. But, presuming that the problem is indeed the database, you'll have to re-architect the database.
SQL doesn't scale easily, unless you spend a bunch of bucks for an Oracle Enterprise server. However, a NoSQL database would be easily scalable to multiple nodes, and you can add them or subtract them as necessary to meet peaks and valleys in demand.
Aside from the implementation effort, there's the cost. Amazon's EC2 cloud can do everything you want, and more -- but at a price.
Thank you very much, mylife!! We’ve hit major performance knees (under peak loads) like this before and each time it required new hardware/software solutions to get over the hump. And each time we ended up with better systems. Praying for the best outcome again.
I’ve had a horrible time for three days! Can’t hardly post without a lot of effort.
I went in and tried to adjust my page to make it easier to load but still having trouble.
Archives? What archives? Who stole my posts! I want them back!
Thanks Jim and John.
Looks like some good improvements in the future.
Keep up the good work, we appreciate all that you do.
Free Republic is da bomb!
I know this will be difficult for you, given that you live to be obtuse, but Jim has posted on this here forum, to send both John and him suggestions in FR mail for their consideration.
Adapt, Improvise and Overcome!
