Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

Seems to work great now.

Are you logged in?
;-}
I found not logging makes the pages load faster. Less overhead to download.
If I am, it's a problem that only exists with connecting to FR. I visit dozens of other sites daily, some forums, others just web pages, and nothing malfunctions like the slow loads/no loads at FR.
Some of the postings you see on theses types of threads could come right out of the mouth of Jay Carney in defense of Barack Obama they are so ridiculous.
I know, I know—it sounds self-congratulatory. I don’t know anything about computers and I’m not trying to pat myself on the back. I just have no problems with FR and it’s kind of a mystery. JimRob and the gang are 3200 miles away from me, so proximity isn’t the reason. But maybe there’s something about my ISP or local traffic being handled expeditiously because we’re near D.C.
Yeah that’s what it is.
Everytime anything happens in the world Anonymous fires up its gear and attacks the website so that a few hundred people can’t talk about it for a few hours or so.
Diabolical.
I used to be a fairly decent writer and am an experienced production and tv engineering person. Lately I have been trying to get on the writing horse with Movie Magic Screenwriter. I miss my Tv stuff in some respects and interested in a serious collaboration.
FR is a very old web design that doesn’t use AJAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_%28programming%29). People are always reloading for the latest update and instead of fetching just the update, the entire page must be loaded. Unlike other popular conservative forums, FR allows links to images so this is another major factor.
This is the message that I frequently get when I try to bring up a FR story: “Failure To Connect To Web Server.” Is this what we’re talking about?
And yes, Mr. or Ms. SmartaZZ, I am logged in.
P.S. The above is what I also get as I try to post this message.
You're completely wrong. There are several intermediate servers that give HORRENDOUS response times at particular times of the day. The tracert command (tracert www.freerepublic.com) reveals the culprits. It's possible that you do not have these servers in your path to Free Republic.
Even on debate nights, I had little trouble. I have a modest machine running Firefox on w7, and a Verizon DSL connection which is not exactly their fastest pipe. I am no IT person. There are no problems loading. Its not any slower than anything else.
I am an IT person. Your experience points the finger AWAY from Free Republic, and to another culprit.
Good idea. The voice said build it and they will come. So we built it, and they came. And kept coming and kept coming. Now the voice is saying bail before they come for you. So I’m bailing as fast as I possibly can, but it’s not working. Need a bigger bucket.
There is a psychology at work here, because we are attached to one another like pen pals, as well as to the fabulous format and the site info, which is available elsewhere. When I periodically can access, I am forced to use the site as a reference point to go elsewhere. Posting a comment is out of the question 95% of the time and I don’t see a useage increase. In fact, noticeably, I don’t see but few old regulars anymore.
My own critical problem has become intolerable since the day BEFORE the third debate. Debate night was out of the question. Eventually, I have to look at myself for tolerating bad service when there is no end in sight. Sadly, FR is shuttering itself and I feel terrible, as a teal addict might.
Now they tell me. Face-palm. Geez, they should told me about that fifteen years ago.

As a practicing FRoholic, I have learned to live with any problems FR might present ... I just have to get my daily fix. Complain if you must, I will just take all the FR I can get and accept any side effects. ;-)
