Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

Who knows? It’s either GWB or Sandy.
Freepers are just going to have to cough up more bucks so that Jim can afford more band width.
'splain that!
same here, you are not alone.
I tried to visit your links (all 3 pages) but it wouldn’t load any of them.
It’s not hackers. Those kind of claims are just ducking the issue.
From what I have seen and what little information has been reported, it’s a database problem. There is either a table fragmentation problem or the size of the database has just outgrown the design/implementation of the software. It’s not likely to be a hardware limitation.
However, all offers of professional help have been spurned, at least publicly. Maybe after the election, it will be reconsidered.
In the meantime, I have been looking for info elsewhere, and dropping in only when things are hanging together long enough for me to pick up some links to articles elsewhere.
The big east coast storm has bottle necked server traffic.

FR servers are on the west coast.
And this problem has been getting steadily worse for the past month or so.
It’s not the storm. This Site is poorly managed.
During the early hours of the day today I had nothing but trouble getting a connection too FReeRepublic. It seemed like every time I tried to connect I would get a 502 Warning message.
I have No Idea what the 502 Message even involved but it was aggravating to say the least.
I have no problems with FR at all. Even on debate nights, I had little trouble. I have a modest machine running Firefox on w7, and a Verizon DSL connection which is not exactly their fastest pipe. I am no IT person. There are no problems loading. It’s not any slower than anything else. This suggests to me that other people may be having trouble related to their hardware, their software, their ISP, their browser, local traffic, or home conditions. (If you’re sharing your network with a teenage gamer, yes, he’s going to suck up all the bandwidth and it will be a nuisance. Ask me how I know!)
Could be. I'm having trouble with many sites. Oddly, FR is behaving better than most.
Oh. ok.
I believe it’s Santa Claus, teh Easter Bunnies, and Toof Fairy...
I normally use Opera v12, but have to use Firefox v16 to get in here, since the 1st debate. FR’s been downright hostile to Opera, but FF is quicker here.
Just seems very slow right now. I find that if it continues to run, I hit the X on the address bar so that it stops running and then hit it one more time, that seems to help.
Good luck.
fundraiser.
Have seen the same thing since the second debate. it must be a DOS attack.
Often get the bad connect at initial loading or when going to “reply or preview and post”, reloading the page maybe works 1 out of 8 times.
Surely FR knows they are and have been having a serious problem. Would really be a nice jesture if someone @ FR posted what’s going on. Otherwise have to assume they have lost server accounts or are now working off an old Commador 64...
Yeah, that's it. A month or two ago, almost everyone on this site suddenly and coincidentally began experiencing slow (or no) response due purely to self-inflicted problems. The common denominator might appear to be Free Republic, but that can't possibly be it. LOL.
