Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

Ask him.
Ha, good point.
Dude, you gotta get hip to the jive! From the Urban Dictionary:
1.But on second thought, I think I should have used this one:
da bomb the best ~ simply outstanding; no comparison or greater value can be placed to another of similar type of manner
2.I think I will go to bed...
Free Republic is Da bomb diggity fo sho used to describe the best of the best, most crazy awsome, exceeds expectations of what would be considered "DA Bomb."
Hey man, believe whatever makes you feel better about it.
Anyhow, yay for sites that work right?
Jim, per the discussion on this thread tonight, I captured some network data on my PC while trying to load the Freerepublic web page. I used Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 for this, and it logged all network activity on my PC for the time it took for the page to load. I have that log in Excel format if it would be any use to you. If you would like to see it let me know how to get the file to you. I would just post it but the data is way to wide to post and remain in vertical columns, i.e. it would wrap.
No Jim, not your imagination. Last night they had an explosion at a ConEd power plant that shut down all of Lower Manhatten. At that very moment Free Republic lit up blazing fast. Page downloads, posts, Freepmail, everything. It stayed that way the rest of the night.
It wasn't until later this morning that we started bogging down again. Now we are back 'smokin' hot. No expert here at all but from what I see NY is killing FR.
Thanks for everything you and John do!
You mean the NY routers, or something technical, not the FReepers, LOLOLOL. (Desperately trying to save you from a lot of FR mail).
“Also, I select and copy my text so I can paste it back in again if it gets lost. Saves cuss words.”
I have been copying mine for weeks. Losing a long written post drives me to blister my Yorkie’s ears with cuss words.
I’ll start opening another window, too.
I would only consider those things if caching has already been addressed. Lots and lots of caching.
LMBO!!! Yes indeed Dear Lady, the routers, not the Freepers!
?
“I have to ask if they contribute financially to this website. I suspect that most of them do not and that they expect to come here for absolutely free and get performance like it was Google.”
Someone always says that and I think you are wrong. Those of us who contribute are probably on here more than others and we would like to be able to use it.
Whatever this problem is, it’s not a lack of money that is making it happen.
I'm not saying hackers but there are several of us that can tell you for a fact, the instant ConEd blew up and all of Lower Manhatten went down last night, every function on FR started working perfectly. That lasted the rest of the night.
It’s getting ridiculous. I find I spend much less time here than I used to because of all these stupid problems. Which sucks because we’re SIX days away from The Most Important Election of our Lifetime...
FR is operating perfectly right now!
It’s the deactivation of the computer “Hal” in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey...

Is someone claiming that offers of help have been spurned?
It’s difficult for those outside of IT to understand the nature of the beast. Throwing money at it won’t fix it and neither will hiring professionals to troubleshoot a system about which they know nothing.
It’s just going to take time and patience.
