Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

Hiya Syncro!
BTTT your every word!
What I’ve been doing is keeping a second window open when I post. If I get a timeout, I check in the other window to see if my post made it through before trying again. Also, I select and copy my text so I can paste it back in again if it gets lost. Saves cuss words.
Losing the archives is my biggest fear.
We have documented so much.
Jim Robinson posted these tips to speed up your FR experience. They worked great on my desktop - not as good on the tablet.

It's nice to hear about some of the "older" designers keeping their skills sharp! ;-)
Cloud may be the way to go; you don't have to worry about the server iron, backups, data protection, power, cooling, etc.; great to offload that to somebody else.
Still, what about content and politics? Most of the bigger Cloud providers are also very Left leaning...
Remember when the NFL wouldn't let Rush Limbaugh buy 1/6th of the St Louis Rams? Would they want Free Republic on their datacenter?
ditto
Semper Fi!
Thanks, Syncro! Just wishing for a little less of da bomb.
“Praying we get through this without losing our minds.”
Of all the things I’ve lost over the years, I miss my mind the most!
OhhRahh!
I’ve shared with ya 4 times the solution and who and how they figger’d it out....even gave you their phone number
that you 1st told me to send to John..They you told me John will not communicate with you and told me to send it to YOU....I did
right after that you bark that ain;t NOBODY gonna get into FR save John, who will not talk to ya
ya might start out with a straight story next time Jim
I’d freepin appreciate it
I get the “Cannot connect” message
Same problem here. Sometimes I just give up completely getting on. Has happened more this month than before. Even after I get on often clicking on the article also is a slow load process or I give up and continue to another post. I never know if I’ll be able to read comments or not or more of the posting.
Well, our current provider also provides cloud services and they’ve been pretty good to us for the last dozen years or so. I’ve had a (tiny) cloud account there for a year or so for development purposes.
My connection works just fine, and I bet I am on here more than most. I am running factory installed VISTA, and have on problems. If my memory serves me correctly, the last fund raiser for new servers raised $6000.00 of a required 15,000. So we need to raise another $ 9,000. Let us try to get through this election thing, then we can discuss what we can do to raise the remainder.
Is hooking into the net cloud cost effective? It seems you pay the more you use, and when you aren’t using as much, you pay less. The cloud is the wave of the future, is it time for FR to get under it?
Dang it, now I'm going to have to open that special little WordPad file I've got for such and add it :)
Jim,
I pinged you just because people were asking questions. I hope it was the right thing to do but I also linked them to earlier threads where you’d explained.
I’m not complaining as I realize you’re all working as fast as possible and that what’s wrong isn’t clear. Just wanted you to know I appreciate you guys and hope you figure it out soon. Leap
I think I understand about the second window. I am not very competent yet working off my cell phone functions and itty bitty keyboard, but I deeply appreciate your help and hope you read elsewhere that your advice on modifying the sidebar configuration I understood, and it did help some for certain periods of time.
Thank you for the pat on the head and your patience. This is a world class format when it’s accessible.
When I first hit the FreeRepublic link to access the site it takes from 5 to 8 seconds to come up, always, and has for several years. I think this is a clue to the overall problem. I am going to trace the link to see where the delay is. No other site does that. They always come up in less than 2 seconds, most less than 1 second. Something is amiss and it may be that Freerepublic access is routed in a way that it can be scrutinized more thoroughly than others. Hopefully a trace will show that.
