The 1991 Noreaster that hit New England in late October was termed the Perfect Storm. A book and a popular movie were made, based on that storm. The more general term perfect storm refers to a rare combination of meteorological circumstances that turns an ordinary storm into a much more devastating event. It happened in October 1991, and it may happen again in October 2012. Heres what the news and weather sources are saying:
The Perfect Storm was a movie about one of the worst storms to hit the east coast of the U.S. and today forecasters are describing whats on its way to New England as the perfect storm. (New England may see perfect storm with Hurricane Sandy: Likelihood increases)

Power can still be out, tree branches can still be down. Inconvenience can lead to people not voting.
Having been through several of these I would recommend these steps first prior to a hurricane.
1. Fill your car up with gas
2. Fill a gas can or two
3. Get water, then some more water
4. Get food that doesn’t need to be cooked.
5. Propane
6. Batteries
7. Generator only if you need electricity (really need it)
8. Plywood for windows
9. Plastic sheeting
10. tarps.
11. Some cards or other games to play, boredom will set it.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one!
I LOL’d at goats and chickens.
bad list a couple in there made some practical ideas., One or two on the list made it but you need a real ax, hoe, shovel, and the means to sharpen with just hand tools. Could be a good set of files might be worth a lot should the SHTF>
I’m in central MA. Not too worried after the ice storm of 2008 where we lost power for 8 days. Now I’m better prepared. The only thing I need to work off my generator is my sump pump and a light and my cellphone charger.
I’ll put the plow frame on my ATV just in case, we’re at 1100 feet above sea level.
My greatest worry is not power but the rain fall total. My sump pump will get a work out and I pray it holds up.
Good Gawd Kart!
I think I went bankrupt just READING that list!
:)
If you have a freezerfull of food you need several good, insulated coolers/ice chests, and scope out handy nearby sources for ice to fill them, grab some as soon as it becomes evident that widespread power outage is imminent, don’t wait, it will be gone and not likely replaced, stores will be out of power, too. Outdoor temps are not going to be cold enough to preserve frozen food.
Water, run tubs and sinks full for bathing and washing dishes. Conserves bottled water for consumption.
Candles, firewood, board games, maybe a hand cranked radio with weather and emergency band, I have a basic one from LL Bean, served me well in power outages for years.
Be on guard about fire. A fire extinguisher is a very good idea with all the candles, fire in the fireplace, etc.
Try to make it fun if you can, like camping. It does drag on, you feel dirty, can’t quite get warm, sick of ad hoc emergency food, cabin fever. You get cranky as all get out. Know it going in and find ways to stave it off. You’ll be glad you did.
It is likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing coastal flooding potential, NOAA forecasts warn. And with some trees still leafy and the potential for snow, power outages could last to Election Day, some meteorologists fear.
That's a week of more without electricity for those who have not prepared. 50-50 Obama declares an emergency and postpones the election.
You might want to add canned chili. It’s good mixed with rice.
Not seeing beer on that list....
It is good mixed with rice, and I have some, but you're right that I should have more. If there's not enough gas in a SHTF situation, that will solve the problem.
But then someone has to stand on the bridge waiting for FEMA to bring them a bottle of water, an MRE and a warm blanket so as to provide the Network Anchors their background Money Shot. I wonder how that will workout for them?
You left out the mother-in-law.
In VA, MD, DE, and NJ, the first flurry each year is more traumatic than an unexpected blizzard dumping 10' of snow on Minnesota. The mid-Atlantic states could be interesting - especially if they lose electricity on election day with these lovely electronic voting machines.
Now I see why you have ‘dumb’ in your screen name. I said use it as a guide and that the list was made for TEOTWAWKI. It just gives people ideas and things that the might not think of. Its just an outline.
Since the liberals are in charge, they will praise FEMA if they manage to give away one bottle of water, one MRE and one blanket. Then they will say an Internet video stopped FEMA from being able to help everyone and it was a disgusting video that they had nothing to do with.
I know people who’ve spent $1,500 on a generator to protect $300 worth of food and have only used it once in the last 8 years.
Who knew!
Good for you, for trying this! I'll have to try it soon (have my eye on a good tree up the street, lots of nuts). In school (as part of California history) we were taught about how the natives lived off of acorns and how they had to leach out the tannic acid to make them edible/palatable. I wish the teacher had gone a step further and actually done a food demonstration!
