What Do You Use To Clean Your Firearms?
Vanity | 10/11/12 | Randy Larsen

Free Republic has had many vanities about which gun to buy. I'm wondering what gun cleaning supplies do you depend on to protect your expensive firearms.

I have always depended on Hoppes products but lately technology has improved.

What do you use to maintain your weapons?

Ed's red. The recipe is available on the internet. Over the years I have tried many different solvents, Hoppe’s, Breakfree, etc. Ed's red is just as good and is not as expensive.

I have heard of KG11. It is supposed to be very good also, but have not tried it yet.

When I was a small kid, I remember Daddy using Hoppes #9. I also remember Mother once said she liked the smell of Hoppes.

I still use it for most guns. I have a can of GI bore cleaner I use for corrosive primers.

After cleaning, I usually just use some old 30 Weight non detergent motor oil or sometimes mil-tec.

I don’t have any guns. Lost them all in a tragic canoeing accident.

Has anyone tried it?

The Mosin breeds rust in the barrel.

I’ve tried Hoppes, soapy vasser, bore cleaner, Windex.. I’m still cleaning the thing for a week until I give up.

I’ve resigned myself to running a couple patches through it prior to firing.

It’s the ammo that does it...

M-Pro-7. It’s not as aggressive as Hoppes, but it works well if you clean regularly.

A lot depends on how you use your firearms. If you use your guns every once and a while, and they spend a lot of time in storage, I recommend Hoppe's. It doesn't really "dry", leaving a protective coating against rust. I carry for work (federal LE) and my guns haven't ever been shot in anger, but they get carried every day. For that reason I use Hoppe's.

You will probably get a bit better first shot accuracy for hunting with a solvent that dries up like Shooter's Choice. If you want to go high tech then Tetra Gun has a bunch of oils, greases and solvents that have some bonding polymer lubricants.

If you are worried about first shot accuracy (long range hunting) the I recommend the following video from the USAMU.
