An 8-year-old Utah boy wrote a letter to his local newspaper after an animal shelter worker failed to write a note to save his cat from being euthanized. "Yesterday grown-ups killed my kitty, my best friend, when they weren't supposed to," he said.
The letter appeared in The Herald Journal, of Logan, on Thursday.

Problem with that is bassets rarely turn up there. Lets be honest, they can be out run by a snail. They can sometimes get away following a smell but they are not built to cover lots of ground.
I missed one not long back at the shelter. He was on the sales floor for 15 minutes they tell me.
There is a rescue group that seems to get all of the bassets in my area. They have 50 of them. No problem right? 10 page application with 3 home visits and 1 unannounced visit. They want to talk to EVERYONE I know, and people I don’t. I have to fence my yard (I live in the country)not allow the dog outside with out being supervised and allow them to visit anytime they want to make sure the dog is doing well and my home is up to their standards.
Now I know why the shelter can place one in 15 minutes and this group has 50 of them they can’t find a home for...
Well, if your heart is set on a Basset Hound then I guess the field is diminished. I was just thinking any good bird dog being rescued may work as well. Happy Hunting!

I did find some really cute lab/basset mix pups I am going to call on in the AM. Not really ready to write off my cat, but should he come home we won’t kick him out. He’ll just have to share his bed with the dog ;)

What a depressing story. I feel so sorry for that little boy who obviously loved his kitty very much.
That said, it doesn’t sound like when the father went to the shelter, it was full of cats. I can understand euthanizing animals to make room for other strays, but this sounds like this place arbitrarily gives strays only a set amount of time regardless of the number of animals housed.
make sure the dog isn’t a cat killer...
Sometimes in our bedroom we have a cat on the bed, a dog under the bed, and a second dog in my chair...
Not sure how a basset hound could catch a cat to be honestly with you. They are not fast, nor are they tall. A cat could sit on a table chair and the dog would likely be helpless in trying to get the cat.
The cat would have to be really dumb to get caught by a basset.
The dog I bought has already been around cats. We should be alright.
