I'd take the cat in and either hire a cat sitter, board her for the week, or find her a new home, but I'm a sucker for the kitties. WRT finding her (possible) owners, ask the vet to see if she's chipped.

An 8-year-old Utah boy wrote a letter to his local newspaper after an animal shelter worker failed to write a note to save his cat from being euthanized. "Yesterday grown-ups killed my kitty, my best friend, when they weren't supposed to," he said.
The letter appeared in The Herald Journal, of Logan, on Thursday.

This is heart breaking. It’s bad enough enough the neighbors and shelter lied; but put this little baby down for no reason. There are wicked people in this world.

I feel really sorry for the kitty AND the child — he may be scarred for life, not being able to trust anyone.

Our cat got out 3 weeks ago. I saw him once but was unable to catch him.

My next animal won’t be a slow fat cat. So who ever has him or shot him better be on the look out because the next critter I buy will make my 23 lb cat look small.

I am so sorry about you losing your cat. I know what a horrible, helpless feeling that gives you. I just wanted to encourage you to look further afield for your kitty. My husband was out running one day (he does marathons) and saw a poster for a missing cat. FIVE miles away, he just happened to see that same cat out in someone’s front yard! Seriously, I’m not kidding. My husband circled back, go the number on the poster, called the number, and the people went and got their kitty. Cats really can roam quite far. Especially if they are frightened, sometimes they just run and run (which is how they get lost). I do hope you find your not-so-little guy.
An unforgivable screw up. Really bad. I would have given the man the cat and told him to return with the payment. I mean come on, it’s UTAH, if people in Utah don’t trust each other just forget everything!
Now I have a bit of a question, we are being visited by a kitty who is very sweet and actually sits outside our door and meows. He looked a little undernourished so we’ve been giving him (her?) food.
We like this cat and (maybe, maaaaybe) would have taken it in already, but our kid is about to have her first baby (any day now!) and at that time we’ll be away for a week or so.
We already have cats, so we’ve been holding off.
What are the chances this cat actually belongs to another family? Is there any way to know?
I already inadvertently “catnapped” a cat (that’s a long a funny story for another thread) for 3 days once.
Any advice would be appreciated!
By feeding the cat, it won’t leave or try to find it’s way home.
Craigslist has a lost and found section. Post a photo and see what you get for replies.
If he is friendly enough scoop him up and take him to a vet. If the owner did the right thing the cat has a chip and that chip can be read by the vet who can return the cat to it’s owner.
my cat is chipped but he has to be with someone who will bring him in. I suspect his fatt butt is somewhere happy to be fed and petted. And thus, he won’t come home until the food runs out.
Pretty good chance. But, you never know.
Take care of your family first. If, when you return and the porch cat is still hanging around, take him in.

That’s good advice, I never thought about an implanted chip. Of course he/she has no collar, but our former cat went out and didnt’ have a collar because I would only let her have the “safety” collars and of course they fell off. (and our poor beloved Holly got hit by a car and died, the only cat I ever had who went outside - DISASTER is all I can really say).
It was really hubby who fed the cat first. (him or George W. Bush if you know what I mean!) But the cat did/does seem undernourished, and it was meowing. We have a lot of random cats around here, but they never come to the door and meow.
I even talked to one gal at work who feeds the outside cats, she says: they never meow.
I have checked Craig’s List and didn’t see anything. They are good, but not good because everything just scrolls. I don’t think there is a good way to search there. I haven’t seen any signs up around here.
A little problem with Craig’s list for us, we are in a strange part of NJ. It is hard to classify us, our area could be considered part of “Central NJ” or “Jersey Shore” of even “Northern NJ”. We are actually Northern NJ Shore, but that is not a category/area.

I think we’d like to keep the kitty, but we’re just not sure if it already has a home.
We can have 3 cats, that’s the max for us I think, but we can do 3.
(I totally have crazy cat lady potential, but I repress it, like I do my vicious Irish temper. - Oh but if I ever it Lotto it will be a great day for cats and a bad day for the Democratic part!)

The posted article about the 8 year old boy is different because they did not follow the instructions. Feel sorry for the kid.
