Most national Republican groups have turned their back on Missouri Senate hopeful Todd Akin, but with the final deadline for the congressman to withdraw from the race about to pass, one conservative group is considering backing him.
Reuters reported that the Senate Conservatives Fund, the Jim DeMint-backed political action committee, polled supporters on whether or not the group ought to back Akin.
Im writing to get your opinion on whether the Senate Conservatives Fund should support Congressman Todd Akin now that he is officially the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri and is polling within single digits of his Democratic opponent, begins the email, signed by Matt Hoskins, executive director of the fund, according to a copy obtained by The Daily Caller.
>snip<
Akin is 100% pro-life and made a mistake in how he explained and defended his position. He quickly apologized, the email says, and goes on to explain that as a result, many outside groups withdrew their support for him, which also discouraged donors.
The Funds interest in the race coincides with Tuesdays final deadline for Akin to drop out of the race. Akin held a press conference several hours before the 5 p.m. deadline to reiterate that he would still be in the race come 5:01 p.m. central time.
The Senate Conservatives Fund has remained neutral, but circumstances have changed in two important ways that require us to take another look, Hoskins says in the email.

This race could determine control of the Senate, and if Akin wins one thing is for sure he wont owe the establishment a thing, the email goes on to say. Well have another true conservative in the Senate who is more interested in joining the fight than the club.

I guess this is a good thing. What I hate is Akin’s bullsh-t claim that he’s an ‘outsider’ and this is just about the establishment fighting a tea party type guy.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Akin is an elected congressman, part of the DC culture and has hired a consummate DC hack who’s foolish advice sunk Newt in Florida. Two good or maybe even great tea party types were defeated by all the libs voting for Akin because he’s not a very bright bulb.
But he needs to beat McCaskill nontheless.
I called Sen DeMint’s organization the other day and told them I would donate to them when they donated to Akin. Akin, warts and all, is way better than McCaskill.
At long last, people are beginning to grudgingly admit their admiration for Todd Akin, a man of principle. The media and every liberal in the country trashed Todd Akin, but he stood tall and unyielding.
Now, it’s his turn and his stature grows daily. He’s feasted on the media, Karl Rove and the GOP establishment and now he’s going to have his Democrat opponent for dessert.
I’m frankly tired of all the people telling us to hold our noses for Romney but toss Akin under the bus.
Keep it up Akin!
Lord the GOPe and conservative have pissed me off during this whole ordeal. The guy won the primary so help him over the line. We are stuck with a creep of a Republican President nominee and told we MUST vote for the idiot and now that a conservative is the Republican Senate Candidate who won the nominee (doesn’t matter how or why) everyone is saying “we must replace him so we don’t have to vote for him”. What idiots all of them.
I sure hope that DeMint’s Senate Conservative Fund provides SUBSTANTIAL support to Akin’s campaign at this very critical time.
After several years of “boycotting” any financial support of the RNC I was actually thinking of resuming my support. I even donated directly to Romney’s campaign when he chose Ryan as his running mate.
However, once the RNC pulled any financial support for Akin, my distaste for the RNC has reemerged BIG TIME and it is unlikely that I’ll ever support them again. I know that MANY conservatives share my thinking on this. I suppose if the RNC relented and provided support to Akin now it would help give me a more possitive view of the RNC. But the IDIOTS who are running the RNC are highly unlikely to change course and do the right thing now.

Akin is an outsider. He is too conservative for the GOP, e.g., his 97.24 lifetime ACU rating and his votes against TARP, No-child left behind, the Prescription Drug Program, McCain-Feingold, and other GOPe pushed bills. Within 24 hours after making his verbal gaffe (including an apology), the GOP disowned him. The RNC announced it was cutting off all funding to him, disinviting him from the convention, and asking him to withdraw. Romney and Ryan joined in the orchestrated outrage within the GOP pressuring Akin to withdraw including conservative talk radio, George "Macacca" Allen, and many MO leading Reps. Just last week Priebus announced that not a dime would go to Akin, who is on the same ticket with Romney and Ryan.
The GOP was very unhappy that Akin won the tough, bruising MO primary. Akin's verbal gaffe was a pretext to force him out. It didn't work and now the GOP is faced with the consequences. They could have handled it much better, but chose to humiliate publicly a fellow colleauge who served 24 years in elective office at the state and federal level. They don't call the GOP the Stupid Party for nothing.
I agree. Anybody the establishment GOP hates just might be okay. Akin was not my first choice, but he has weathered the storm and we need to win this seat. I intend to contribute to Akin, and I hope others do also.
Blunt backs Akin’s Senate bid after exit deadline passes
Ohhhh what a difference a day makes!!!
This has been floating around for at least a couple of days now.
Time to fish or cut bait, DeMint.
On Greta last night on Fox, she grilled Newt about his newly found support for Akin, asking how Newt could support him when he said something so stupid.
Newt’s response: you have to compare 5 seconds of stupidity, for which he has apologized, against 5 years of bad voting by the current Democratic Senator -— and there is no choice.
Take your Akin kool aid somewhere else. You shame conservatives by supporting this clown. There were two far superior conservatives in the race, and I mean far superior true conservatives.
Akin comes off as an idiot and he is bunker mentality arrogant and he won the primary with Dem cross over votes and too stupid to realize it.
I’m no fan of the GOPe by any means, have written about them for years in very unflattering terms. But Akin is a joke. I hope he beats McCaskill, but he is still an embarrassment. Again, take your Akin kool aid elsewhere.
newts former spokesperson is now spokesperson for Akin too....
Maybe you should learn a little more about Akin and his opponents. Akin was the most conservative person in the race. Do you think Brunner, the Chamber of Commerce candidate was the most conservative? Akin was endorsed by:
Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas and 2008 presidential candidate
Congressman Jeb Hensarling, Vice Chair of Committee on Financial Services (R-TX)
Congressman Jim Jordan, Chair of Republican Study Committee (R-OH)
Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX)
Congressman Steve King (R-IA)
Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, 2012 presidential candidate (R-MN)
Phyllis Schlafly, President of Eagle Forum
Akin comes off as an idiot and he is bunker mentality arrogant and he won the primary with Dem cross over votes and too stupid to realize it.
Yeah, right. It is tin foil hat time. It was a big conspiracy. Akin's 217,404 votes (36%) came from a cabal of Dem voters.
But Akin is a joke. I hope he beats McCaskill, but he is still an embarrassment. Again, take your Akin kool aid elsewhere.
The joke is on you. Akin is far from an embarrassment. I agree with his votes against TARP, the prescription drug program, "No child left behind," McCain-Feingold, Obamacare, etc. Take you ill-informed crap somewhere else. The RINOs believed Akin was an "embarrassment," which is why they tried to force him out.
The way he was treated is a disgrace. He and his family deserved far better after 24 years in elective office representing the GOP. And I respect his family values, his military service and raising 6 fine children, three of whom are naval academy graduates who all served in the USMC including one in Fallujah. If Todd Akin is an embarrasment to the GOP, then it is time to get rid of the Stupid Party and start a real party that represents conservative values.
