Day and night may be officially equal at the equinox, but in fact there is a bit more than 12 hours between sunrise and sunset for a few days after the fall equinox (and for a few days before the spring equinox) because the atmosphere makes the sun appear to be still above the horizon for a few minutes after it has set and before it rises.
